Tennis clubs in East Auckland and across the country will open the courts to anyone interested in trying the racquet sport this Sunday.
Fiona Macleod of Bucklands Beach Tennis Club said the benefits of playing tennis are more than just hitting the ball out of the net and hitting the court marking line.
“This is the official statement! Several scientific studies have confirmed that playing tennis is one of the best sports and can keep people happy, healthy and connected.
“It not only has a wide range of benefits to the body — improves balance, stretch, softness and cardiopulmonary function, but also stimulates thinking and requires concentration and concentration.
“For adults, tennis can make them live longer, and for children, in addition to more obvious sports skills, tennis can develop social skills, perseverance and self-discipline,” McLeod said.
“Luckily, in the east of Auckland, there are many thriving local tennis clubs to join, and tennis players of any age and level can be part of this friendly, inclusive community.
McLeod said that on National Tennis Day on September 7, tennis clubs in Bucklands Beach, Howwik, Sunny Hills, Crue, Pakuranga and Coker Bay are open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to “let locals walk into the club to show their skills.”
“This love tennis event, promoted nationwide by the New Zealand Tennis Association, gives everyone the opportunity to discover the characteristics of the local club.”
Julia Sheen, an experienced coaching director at Bucklands Beach Tennis Club, said: “Our youth courses are very popular, from young children who learn to catch the ball at the age of five or six to teenagers who compete in school teams and Auckland’s top games, we serve them.
“I especially like to get adults on the field. Some people have watched it on TV and want to give it a try.
“Many people played this game as kids or on vacation and now want to pick it up and learn how to play it correctly,” Sim said.
“Our adult experience courses are always energized. As part of the discount for adult introductory membership, free first semester is a great way to get started.”

Macleod said all participating East Auckland Love Tennis Club will offer “interesting activities, coaching and borrowed equipment and provide all families with opportunities for experience, all free of charge.”
“Many clubs, such as Bucklands Beach, offer special membership prices for new members who join that day or before the end of spring.”
Club Love Tennis visitors can also sign up for free to win the ASB Classic International Championship pass in January 2026.
“These events provide an excellent opportunity to get close to professional male and female tennis players from all over the world and demonstrate their extraordinary skills and athleticism,” McLeod said.
“It’s easier than ever to try or play tennis now, and there are so many opportunities locally to participate in the ‘Love Tennis’ event on September 7,” Sim said.
“Bring your friends and neighbors. Tennis is for everyone. That’s why tennis is one of the most popular sports in the world, and it’s so easy to get to it in East Auckland. We love tennis.”
Pakuranga Tennis Club President Lucia Loy said the club will provide services other clubs are doing, as well as some “special opportunities”.
“The teenager will get a tennis racket and a can of balls,” she said.
“The seniors will receive $50 off memberships in 2025-26, a can of balls and a six-week new membership group coaching course.
“We welcome players of all abilities to participate. We offer all equipment, no experience required, free admission, and no limit on attendance,” Loy said.
