The Sports Arbitration Court (TAS) This Thursday, September 4, it has dismissed the appeal of six clubs from the Expansión mx alloy.
Despite this reverse for its immediate goals, the resolution of the TAS ratifies the return of the system of Ascent and descent in Mexican football, from the 2026-27 season.
In an official statement, the international body based in Lausana explained:
“TAS has rejected the appeal presented by Mexican Clubs of Second Division (‘The Clubs’) against the Mexican Football Federation (FMF), in relation to the application of immediate reinstatement of the ascent system and descent in the Mexican League of First Division (MX Liga).”

Initially, there were 10 teams that joined the appeal against the TAS. However, with the passing of the months, four institutions decided to withdraw from the process: Cimarrones de Sonora FC, Alebrijes de Oaxaca FC and Jaiba Brava.
In this way, the clubs that kept their position firm were:
- La Paz Athletic Club
- Morelia Athletic Club
- Cancún fc
- CD Zacatecas Miners
- Venados FC
- Black lions of the UdeG
These teams argued that the promotion and descent system is a fundamental pillar for competitiveness and sports development in Mexico, in addition to representing an economic and sports incentive for institutions.

It is important to remember that on May 19, 2025 an appeal was filed with the objective of canceling the FMF decision to maintain the suspension of the promotion for this season. After an audience held in Mexico City on August 28, The TAS analyzed the evidence and determined that the Mexican Football Federation acted according to what was agreed.
“On August 28, 2025, a face -to -face audience was held in Mexico City. After examining the tests, the arbitration formation confirmed that the FMF had determined to suspend the system until the closing of the 2025/2026 season and that the FMF duly informed the clubs when the decision was made. Consequently, the appeal is rejected.”
“The arbitral formation specifically confirmed that the sports seasons that were affected by the Agreement of the General Assembly of the FMF of April 24, 2020 to suspend the ascent and descent system correspond to those mentioned in the decision made by the FMF on April 29, 2025, the last season being the 2025/2026,” he added.
