The San Antonio Spurs are finally seeing a clear path forward after a few seasons of rebuilding. As 2019, the Texas franchise had struggled to find a consistent trajectory. While the 2025 campaign ended without a playoff appearance, the injury to Victor Wembanyama undeniably altered the team’s fate.
With the addition of Dylan Harper, selected second overall in the 2025 NBA Draft, and a promising young core bolstered by a few seasoned veterans, the future looks radiant. However, a new challenge is emerging in the backcourt: an abundance of talent that could quickly lead to internal competition and potential friction.
“Last season, the Spurs were one of the rare teams for whom it made sense to bet on a leader of this caliber. They recovered De’Aaron Fox. He wanted to be there.It was an easy win. Then they jumped into the lottery and got Dylan Harper. Today, San Antonio has three guards for two long-term spots with harper, Fox, and Stephon Castle,” explained Sam Quinn to CBS Sports. Quinn believes this dilemma is unavoidable and could force a departure within the next two to three years.
A Delicate Balance to Maintain with Rich Paul
For now, the Spurs must tread carefully. A hasty departure of Fox would send a negative signal throughout the league.The point guard’s agent, Rich Paul, represents over 40 NBA players, including some of the biggest rising stars. Moving Fox right away is sending a clear message to others: this is how you will be treated if you try to join San Antonio,
Quinn added, emphasizing that alienating an agent of Paul’s stature could have repercussions far beyond a single transaction.
Recent history underscores the critical importance of managing relationships with Rich Paul.Back in 2022, the Spurs traded Dejounte Murray, another player in Paul’s portfolio, but under circumstances deemed respectful. This approach helped maintain the franchise’s credibility. Conversely, a misstep in the Fox situation could permanently damage relations and hinder future negotiations.
Adding another layer to this is the influence of LeBron James, a close associate of Paul and widely considered one of the most powerful figures behind the scenes in NBA history. Antagonizing an agent of this caliber risks putting the Spurs at odds with an entire network that significantly impacts market dynamics.
For Fox himself,the situation remains complex. His partnership with Wembanyama hasn’t had a real chance to flourish yet, largely due to injuries that have hampered the French prodigy’s momentum. His statistical dip, therefore, needs to be viewed in context, and his long-term impact alongside the new Texan generation is still waiting to be fully realized.
