Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sincess (Pedro Sánchez) in connection with the dramatic situation in Gaza, which prevails for hunger, has called for Israeli athletes to participate in international sports events, writes the British broadcaster BBC.
Sanchez told his party that Israel could not be allowed to use sporting events and competitions so that it could polish its image. The Prime Minister stated that Israel should be treated as in Russia after it invaded Ukraine.
In response, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sara on September 14 called Sanchez as a shame, and insulted Spaniard to encourage protests in Palestinian support in Madrid. As a result, the final round of the Vuelta A España cycling competition was canceled, with the Israeli team.
Sanchez had set support for previous protests and stated that Spain was set an example on Gaza’s issue. Several Spanish government ministers have also welcomed protests at the final day of the competition, which, according to official statistics, participated in about 100,000 people. Israel has regularly denied that Gaza has expanded genocide and all actions justify defense.
Spanish Minister of Culture Ernest Urtasun has announced that Israel should not participate in “Eurovision.”
The public broadcasters of Ireland and the Dutch have already informed that it will not participate in the song competition if there are Israel among the participants.
The relations between Israel and Spain have been fragile since the end of 2023, when Sanchez has expressed concern about the situation of civilians in Gaza. In 2024, Spain joined Norway and Ireland and recognized the Palestinian statehood. Last week, Sanchez insulted Israel’s genocide and announced a series of restrictions that Spain had adopted against Israel.
A recent population survey shows that at least 82% of Spaniards believe that Gaza is implementing genocide.
The President of the European Commission, Ursula Von Der Leyen, has announced the termination of free trade with Israel as well as the suspension of bilateral support, and pointed to a deliberate hunger situation. She also condemned Europe’s inability to respond adequately to the crimes committed by Israel.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has repeatedly denied that Gaza was hunger and stated that even if food is missing somewhere, it is because of the Hamas of Help organizations and the theoristic group Hamas. Israel controls all Gaza’s border crossing points, and as an occupied force, it is obliged to ensure the protection of civilians in front of international laws, including failure to allow food shortages, but is not implemented.
