BRATISLAVA. The transfer of David Sagittarius from Slovan in Bratislava to FC Middlesbrough is a big topic in our country. The Slovak champion should bring a record package of money. If bonuses are fulfilled, they are said to be up to ten million euros (EUR 7.5 million basic amount).
It’s not the first transfer on the Slovan route – to FC Middlesbrough.
“At the end of 1996 I signed a contract with Middlesbrough and in January 1997, when I received a work permit, I went to England. I had 27,” he described in the book Wild nineties Vladimir Kinder.
Today, FC Middlesbrough is the leader of the second English league, in the Kinder era (played for Slovan with Milan Sagittarius, father David) he also worked in the highest competition.
“I did not deal with the first Slovak football player in the Premier League. I did not even praise it. None of it did a big hallo. Several Slovak footballers had to play in England.
During his time in FC Middlesbrough, he got up to three times to the famous Cup final and played at the famous Wembley.
As the money was lost on the way
Slovan was supposed to collect a million pounds for transfer to Middlesbrough. Taking into account inflation, it is as if someone has transferred from the Slovak league for seven million euros today.
“In addition to my“ manager ”, one Italian manager worked on the transfer. Out of a million pounds, 250,000 pounds lost on the way from Middlesbrough to Manchester, ”Kinder continued in his book Wild Ninety. He further described the strange route of finance.
“Subsequently, the money went to Vaduz so they don’t have to be taxed. But there was only x marks (you will learn the amount in the book Wild Ninety, note ed.), Which was significantly less compared to the pounds,” Kinder revealed.
“The then chief of the Slavs came to Vaduza for the money, to whom the” manager “said he wanted 500,000 marks for my direction,” Kinder said.

Forgot about the bonus
In his words, the “manager” forgot to pay him a signature bonus. “The first year I was supposed to get 50,000 pounds and 100,000 pounds for the second year. He told me to send the money to his account, let me not tax it.
At his transfer, he explained how transfers worked abroad in those years. It was not unusual that the clubs first agreed on the transfer amount and when the contract was to sign, one club suddenly increased and the other’s representatives stood up and left immediately.
“The management of the Slavs has tripped me two years before transfer to Middlesbrough. I was supposed to move to Leicester City. In the second -league English club I was rehearsal for two weeks.
According to him, the clubs agreed on a severance pay of £ 800,000. “The English came to Bratislava to sign a contract, but the Slavs at the last minute said they changed their mind and wanted a million pounds. Leicester representatives stood up and went home immediately,” Kinder continued.
Ten times higher salary
How much did he earn when arriving in Middlesbrough?
“At that time there was one pound of 60 Slovak crowns. In Slovan I earned up to 100,000 crowns a month at the end of my work, in Middlesbrough I had about ten times higher salary,” he admitted.
His first trip to England was unforgettable. “I flew from Vienna to London, but I did not manage to make a national line to Middlesbrough. I had to release my ticket myself and paid 700 pounds in London one night.
He explained how he sold to England. Communicated with his hands and feet
“At that time there were not many football managers yet and I do not think that the scouts went to watch the Slovak league. We made our visible especially in European matches, but we usually went to rehearsal first and according to her the clubs decided whether they would take us,” said the former extreme defender.
Hands and feet
Kinder was also in Middlesbrough first on the test. “I played one preparatory match and after him the English showed interest in me. Italian agent who handled the transfer lived in Manchester. He had good relations with coach Bryan Robson,” Kinder explained.
The beginnings in the new environment were challenging. “After arriving in Middlesbrough I communicated with my hands and feet. I learned English privately, I went to Newcastle to the Slovak teacher.
From Middlesbrough I had it by car for three quarters of an hour and I often met the Czech goalkeeper Pavel Srníček. He caught the Newcastle and in the beginning he helped me a lot, “Kinder concluded. You will learn more in the book Wild Ninety.
He worked in the English club in three seasons (1997-1999), scoring five goals in 45 matches. Of these, three in the Premier League. He also played the second league. Every year he had to apply a work permit to work in England.
A lifetime experience
“During two and a half -year work in Middlesbrough, I have experienced the atmosphere of Wembley up to three times. It was a fantastic, experience for life. I never played eighty thousand spectators before,” Kinder described in his book Wild Ninety. He met with the then England Queen Elizabeth II.
“It happened in Wembley after the final match of the Leicester League Cup, or Chesle. Unfortunately, in both cases we were pulling a shorter end.
In his first season in England, he first played the final of the League Cup. In the first match in Wembley he tied with Leicester City 1: 1, but Kinder did not play.
“In a repeated meeting at the Hillsborough stadium, where a great tragedy happened eight years earlier and 96 people died, I have already joined the basic line -up.
I played the whole match. Again, it was decided in the overtime, we collected in 100 minutes and we lost 0: 1, ”Kinder recalled.
They had nights in front of the arena
A month later, Middlesbrough played the FA Cup final against London’s Chelsea.
“When I came to the training, I didn’t believe with my own eyes. Thousands of fans were waiting for tickets. They wanted to secure a place on the stands in Wembley. Some of them had the night before the stadium. They traveled to London with special trains.
“I wanted to start from the beginning and I was a little bothered that it did not. But few will get to the FA Cup final, so I was pleased that I played at least the last quarter of an hour,” he added. The stars such as Zola, Vialli, Wise, Di Matteo or Lobeuf joined Chelsea.
“We also had interesting players such as Raanselli and Brazilians Juninho and Emerson. I got among the nominated fourteen from the 28-member cadre, as only three substitutes were allowed at that time,” Kinder explained.
Chelsea was better and deservedly won 2: 0.
Replaced the colors
Less than a year later, Kinder played another final against Chelsea in Wembley, this time the league cup.

“It was a much more balanced match. The fact that we got to the finals as a second -league player was a big surprise. The match reached the extension, but we lost 0: 2 again.
Mentioned the story.
“When we played in the Wembley Finals against Chelsea, I needed twenty tickets for friends from Slovakia. One half of the stadium was red, which are Middlesbrough club colors, the other blue, which is associated with Chelsea.”
His friends sat down at Middlesbrough fans and some of them wore blue T -shirts. People asked them if they were making Chelsea.
“No, we are friends Vlad Kinder from Slovakia,” they defended. “So why are you dressed in blue?” did not understand.
Friends quickly went to the shops and bought club jerseys, scarves and caps. When they returned to the grandstand, they missed a great applause. “It’s okay now,” Middlesbrough fans said.
