NYON – The European Football Union (UEFA) awarded the Slovaks the title of European Champions of 1976.
At the then championship in Belgrade, Czechoslovakia conquered, basically with eight Slovaks, West Germany 5: 3 in an eleven shot after a draw 2: 2 after overtime. After the division of Czechoslovakia, the title was assigned to Czechs, from Friday it belongs to both countries.
For many years, the triumph at the European Championship 1976 was attributed exclusively to the Czech side. However, the Slovak share is undeniable. In addition to the eight players, the Slovak was also an assistant coach Václav Ježek, namely the legendary Jozef Venglos.
Thanks to the Slovaks, both goals were scored when Ján Švehlík and Karol Dobiaš scored. Of the five eleven, three of the Slovaks fell, Marián Masný, Captain Anton Ondruš and Ladislav Jurkemík succeeded. The shootout ended with his legendary lobby Antonín Panenka and since then this piece has been named after him.
The 1976 tournament in Yugoslavia remains one of the most dramatic in the history of the European Championship. Czechoslovakia was shocked by the football world when in the semifinals in Zagreb defeated the Netherlands 3: 1 after overtime, and subsequently on June 20 in Belgrade at the Crvena Zvezda stadium came against the reigning world champions from West Germany.
