Dream duel: Sinner and Alcaraz play for title and number 1
The final act of the Grand Slam season offers the best that is currently available in tennis-and a historical premiere. Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz will play more than just about the trophy.
The dream finals at the US Open is perfect and becomes a showdown for number one in the tennis world. Last year’s winner Jannik Sinner will play against French Open Champion Carlos Alcaraz on Sunday and can defend the top position on the ATP ranking with a Grand Slam Triumph in New York.
In the semifinals, Sinner had to fight longer than his final opponent. He prevailed against the Canadian outsider Felix Auger-Alicassime 6: 1, 3: 6, 6: 3, 6: 4 after a set loss. Alcaraz showed the record-grand slam winner Novak Djokovic, which was invalid at the end, at 6: 4, 7: 6 (7: 4), 6: 2 the borders. The final (8:00 p.m. MESZ/Sky and Sporteurope.tv) at Arthur Ashe Stadium also wants to visit US President Donald Trump, as the tournament organizers of the German Press Agency confirmed.
“An incredible season. That I’m back in the final – it couldn’t be better. Sunday will be a very special day,” said Sinner, who converted the decisive match ball after 3:21 hours. The Italian thus moved into the final at all four Grand Slam tournaments this year. He was able to win two of them, and the third title could be added on Sunday.
The 24-year-old had some problems against Auger-Alicassime after two outstanding tournament rounds. After the sentence compensation, Sinner was treated outside the square. “It’s nothing bad,” he said. At the end of the third section, the Canadian also seemed struck.
Two young stars dominate the tennis world
The professional era has never existed in the professional era that they face each other in three Grand Slam endgames within one season. The duel between Sinner and Alcaraz is now even in a row. “You are just too good,” says the inferior Djokovic.
At the French Open, Alcaraz had triumphed in an almost epic match, in Wimbledon it was a Sinner. The two young stars make up the most important titles in tennis among themselves for the second year. The final act on Sunday also has a special charm for Alcaraz: triumphs the Spaniard, he would replace Sinner as number one in the tennis world since the end of May 2024.
“Being here again in the final of the US Open feels great. It wasn’t the best level of the tournament of me. I opened very well, that was very important today. In general, I played good tennis,” said Alcaraz after his success against Djokovic, for which he needed 2:23 hours. The tournament winner from 2022 brought the rare feat without marching a set loss through the tournament in Flushing Meadows.
Djokovic go out the forces
For Djokovic, Alcaraz, who has been playing in an outstanding form for weeks, was simply too strong. The 22-year-old was also not irritated by a failed start to the second set, a 0: 3 deficit and “Nole, Nole” calls of the audience. The 38 -year -old Serbs, on the other hand, was clear to the effort.
The tie -break of the second set brought the preliminary decision. “Unfortunately, I went out of energy after the second set,” admitted Djokovic. “Then I was exhausted and he continued.”
The veteran formed a heart to say goodbye to his hands, but his last appearance in New York shouldn’t have been. At all four tournament highlights this season, he was in the semi -finals – then it was always over. Djokovic knows that it is becoming increasingly difficult for him to get the longed-for 25th Grand Slam title. “I will continue to fight, try to reach the end games and to fight a trophy,” said the four-time US Open Champion. He is planning for the full Grand Slam season 2026.
