The quest for a major badminton title in 2025 continues for Indian doubles stars Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty. While their recent performance at the China Masters final showed flashes of brilliance,it ultimately ended in a familiar outcome against the formidable South Korean duo of Kim Won Ho and Seo Seung Jae. This match, much like a nail-biting Super Bowl overtime or a crucial Game 7 in the NBA Finals, highlighted the fine margins that separate champions from contenders.
In the men’s doubles final at the Shenzhen Arena, Satwik and Chirag, currently ranked World No.7, started strong. They established a commanding 14-7 lead in the opening game, a position that would typically feel like a cozy lead in a tennis match. Though, their opponents, the reigning World No. 1 pair and this season’s dominant force, demonstrated why they are considered unstoppable. Kim Won Ho and Seo Seung Jae, who have already secured seven titles this year, calmly erased the deficit and went on to win the match 21-19, 21-15. Their victory solidifies their status as the current world champions and All England winners.
This loss, while disappointing, comes after a period of strong form for the Indian pair. Satwik and Chirag, former World No. 1s themselves, had navigated their way to the final with impressive victories, including a decisive win over their arch-rivals and world No. 2 pair, Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik of Malaysia. Their confidence was palpable, but it couldn’t quite match the resilience shown by the Koreans, who proved their mettle by surviving a significant early deficit.
Reflecting on the match, Chirag acknowledged the missed chance in the first game. “We played some really good badminton over the past two weeks or so. It’s been really good,” he stated. “They’ve (Koreans) been playing really well, their ranking and the world title suggests the same. We had our chances at 14-7 (Game 1). Probably, we could have been steadier then. Also, credit to them, they came out with some really good badminton but we stuck there until the end. A few lucky points here and there and it (game) turned away from us. happy with the way we played but we’re still hunting for the title.” This sentiment echoes the frustration felt by any athlete who has seen a lead slip away in a critical moment, akin to a football team giving up a late touchdown.
Satwik echoed these thoughts, emphasizing the role of confidence. “It’s all about confidence too. The way they have been playing in the last few months… it’s been amazing,” he explained. “Going into the tie, we thought of playing good badminton. Obviously, they won’t give away easy points and their defense is exceptional. We had a plan…we maintained it till the first half. From then, they came up with a few points here and there and that confidence was visible in their game when it was 19-all. We’re right up there. It’s just a matter of time. It could have been a different scenario if we had captured the first game.Happy with the way we’re playing and good to get back-to-back podium finishes.” his words suggest that while the outcome wasn’t a win,the consistent high-level performances are building towards that ultimate goal, much like a team building momentum through the regular season towards a playoff run.
This latest encounter marks the second time Satwik and Chirag have fallen to the Korean duo this year. However, the Indian pair has a proven track record of overcoming challenges and turning the tide in their favor. As Satwik suggests, it may indeed be a matter of time before they break through and claim that elusive title, proving that even the most dominant opponents can eventually be overcome with persistence and strategic adjustments, a narrative familiar to any fan of sports history.
