Portugal started the qualification for the World Cup 2026 with a large victory over Armenia. In Armenia it became 0-5, partly due to two goals from Cristiano Ronaldo. England won with modest figures from Andorra: 2-0.
Ronaldo scored his 139th and 140th goal for Portugal in his 222nd international match. The Portuguese – who, through participation in the final round of the Nations League, started later than other countries on the World Cup qualification – are in a group with (next to Armenia) Ireland and Hungary.
With two hits from João Félix, two of his Al-Nassr teammate Ronaldo and one from João Cancelo (Al-Hilal), all goals were scored by players playing in the Saudi league. The second from Ronaldo – a wonderful bang in the far corner – was the most beautiful.
England not on steam
England won his fourth game in a row against Andorra and is at the top of a group with Serbia, Albania, Latvia and Andorra. The gap with Serbia, which won 1-0 in Latvia, is now five points.
England, which has not lost a World Cup qualification match at home for 25 years, never completely steamed in Birmingham against Andorra. Due to its own goal and a header from Declan Rice, Andorra, which never scored against England, lost 2-0.
