Tadej Pogačar proved his dominance once again, shedding his world champion rainbow jersey for the green of Slovenia and launching a decisive attack with 100 kilometers remaining. His relentless pace saw him extend his lead considerably, establishing a seemingly insurmountable advantage just 30 kilometers later. By the time he approached the Kigali circuit for the final passages, victory appeared all but assured for the four-time Tour de France champion.
This dominance materialized less than two hours later, with Pogačar maintaining his considerable gap over his pursuers. Remco Evenepoel emerged as the strongest contender among the chasers, ultimately finishing second, nearly 10 seconds behind the winner. Ireland’s Ben Healy rounded out the podium.
Despite a challenging course designed to create uncertainty, the route ultimately failed to disrupt Pogačar’s supremacy. It came as little surprise when Pogačar initiated his decisive move on Mount Kigali with 104 kilometers still to race. While the UAE Team Emirates colors were not instantly prominent at the front, the top three riders were all from the Emirati formation: Pogačar, Isaac Del Toro, and Juan Ayuso. Ayuso initially rode alongside Pogačar, with the Slovenian appearing to conserve energy for his teammate, even as Del Toro managed to hang on for a critically important portion of the race.
Evenepoel’s Saddle Woes
Though, with 70 kilometers to go, any pretense of teamwork dissolved as Pogačar rode solo against the rest of the field. A significant moment occurred when Evenepoel was forced to dismount due to a perceived saddle issue. rather than continuing, the belgian stopped for adjustments,a decision that led to frustration, wasted energy, and a second bike change, costing him approximately 40 seconds in a rather peculiar turn of events.
Despite this setback, the triple world time trial champion managed to rejoin the peloton and lead the chase behind Pogačar. However, his efforts were insufficient to close the gap, which remained around a minute. The pursuit group eventually coalesced around evenepoel, Mattias Skjelmose, and the persistent Healy.
The combined efforts of the chasers failed to faze Pogačar.His commanding performance left many riders struggling, with only 30 out of 165 starters still in contention when Pogačar crossed the finish line. The early withdrawal of riders like Julian Alaphilippe, who abandoned the race early due to fatigue, underscored the brutal nature of the day for many competitors.
