On Friday, September 12th, the last Austrian representatives started at the Amazing Thailand – Pattaya BWF World Senior Championships 2025 in Pattaya. Both Sabine Aberner and Tariq FarooQ fought their way into the quarter -finals, but had to accept defeats against the top players.

Quarter final games on Friday

Sabine Aberer (DE-55+) continued her strong tournament performance and, after her round of 16, stood in the quarter-finals about the Englishman Betty Blair. There she met the 5/8 seed Indian Poonam Tatwawadi. In both sentences, Aberner was able to make the game open, but in the end had to give up with 13:21 and 16:21. As the best Austrian, she achieved the quarter -finals in her age group.

Tariq FarooQ (HE-70+) had also reached the round of the last eight after convincing appearances. There was an extremely experienced opponent with the top seed Malaysier Bruni Garip. Farooq kept up well in phases, but had to recognize the superiority of the favorite and was defeated with 13:21 and 9:21.

Double competitions on Thursday evening

The double competitions with Austrian participation came to an end on Thursday evening.

  • Harald Hochgatterer/Reinhard Hechenberger (HD-50+) met the pairing from Thailand placed on No. 3 and could not climb into the next round despite combative performance.

  • Tariq Farooq and his Swedish partner Bo Christer Bertilson had to give up an Indian duo in the men’s double 70+.

Balance of the ÖBV team

With the quarter-finals from Sabine Aberer in women’s singles 55+ and Tariq FarooQ in men’s singles 70+ and several round of rounds, the Austrian team can look back on respectable results. Particularly noteworthy is the surprise success of Sabine Aberer about the 3/4-drafted Englishman Betty Blair and Farooq’s sovereign round of 16 against the Frenchman Pierre Premat.

ÖBV senior sports speaker Reinhard Hechenberger drew a positive overall assessment:

“Our players have proven at these world championships that they are competitive at an international level. The two quarter -finals by Sabine Aberer and Tariq FarooQ as well as the other round of 16 are a gratifying result.”

This ends the tournament from a Austrian perspective. The team was able to collect important international competition practice with committed achievements and dignely represent the ÖBV at the World Championships.
