Despite a monumental effort from Breanna Stewart, who became the fastest player in WNBA playoff history to reach 1,000 career playoff points, the New York Liberty fell short against the Phoenix Mercury. Stewart poured in 30 points, grabbed 9 rebounds, dished out 3 assists, and added 2 blocks and 2 steals, shooting an efficient 8-of-17 from the field and 12-of-15 from the free-throw line. Though, her stellar performance, along wiht 22 points from Sabrina Ionescu, wasn’t enough to overcome the Mercury’s balanced attack. The rest of the Liberty’s roster contributed only 23 points combined.
The Phoenix Mercury showcased a more cohesive team effort, spearheaded by Alyssa Thomas’s remarkable triple-double. Thomas recorded 20 points, 11 rebounds, and 11 assists, while Sutou Sabally added a important 23 points and 12 rebounds.This marks Thomas’s fifth career playoff triple-double, an astounding feat considering the WNBA has seen only seven such performances in its history. The game itself was a hard-fought contest, with both teams battling intensely throughout. However, a crucial 7-0 run by the Mercury in the final five minutes proved to be the decisive blow, dashing the Liberty’s hopes of advancing. This loss signifies the end of the season for the Liberty, including player Marine Johannès, who did not play in this deciding game.
