Inter Miami striker Luis Suarez was suspended six games after sparking a fight and spit on one of the members of the Seattle staff at the end of the League Cup final on Sunday, the disciplinary committee of the tournament announced on Friday.
The suspension of the ex-star of Liverpool and Barcelona, 38, should only apply for the next edition of the League Cup, a tournament bringing together teams from Mexico and MLS, according to the disciplinary committee. But the MLS “reserves the right” to inflict an additional sanction, specifies the commission.
At the end of the meeting where Inter Miami sank against the Sounders of Seattle (3-0), the Uruguayan, known for its many slippages, caused chaos scenes. Just after the final whistle, he crossed the ground to go to one of his opponents, the middle of Seattle Obed Vargas. He rushed towards him, caught him by the neck, triggering a general fight with several players and members of the staff of the two teams.
Luis Suarez apologized
During the scuffle, Suarez seemed to spit towards one of the assistants of Seattle, according to television images. The player then apologized on social networks a few days later, evoking “a moment of great tension and frustration” and regretting that “things that should not have happened, but that does not justify the reaction that I had”, in an Instagram story. “I was wrong and I sincerely regret it,” he added.
The Suarez teammates at Inter Miami Sergio Busquets and Tomas Aviles received two suspension games for the first, and three for the second. One of the members of the staff of Seattle Steven Lenhart was suspended for five games.
