Liverpool UCL Squad: Star Player Omitted

Liverpool Confirm Champions League Squad without Federico Chiesa

Liverpool have announced their 22-man list for the opening phase of the UEFA Champions League, with one name missing that will raise eyebrows among supporters. Federico Chiesa, who only joined the club in the summer, has not been included in Arne Slot’s squad for Europe.

Champions League Draw Delivers Heavyweight Fixtures

Last week’s draw in Monaco placed the Premier League champions into a demanding schedule. Liverpool will host Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, PSV Eindhoven and Qarabag at Anfield, while away fixtures include Inter Milan, Eintracht Frankfurt, Marseille and Galatasaray.

Slot’s side impressed in the 2024–25 league phase, collecting seven wins from eight matches, only to fall in the round of 16 against eventual winners Paris Saint-Germain. Speaking to Liverpoolfc.com, the manager was realistic about the challenge ahead.

“I think the first thing to say is that like last season, it is a very challenging draw, but we knew that it would be because in the Champions League, especially with the new format, there is no such thing as an easy draw.

“But what is also clear is that this is a very exciting draw, full of big games both home and away. To be able to welcome Real Madrid to Anfield again is something special. Last season’s game was of course a memorable one – and I expect the same this time around. That is, I am sure, a fixture that the whole world will be looking at.”

Slot also underlined the pedigree of PSV Eindhoven, Galatasaray and Qarabag, while acknowledging the quality of Inter, Atletico, Frankfurt and Marseille. He added that the travelling support would once again play a vital role in stadiums known for their intensity.

Chiesa Left Out Despite Bright Moments

The most striking aspect of the squad list is the omission of Federico Chiesa. The Italian international has made three substitute appearances for Liverpool this season, including scoring a decisive 88th-minute winner against Bournemouth. His absence is notable given his potential to offer versatility and experience in attack.

Chiesa was also left out of the latest Italy squad for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, with head coach Gennaro Gattuso explaining that it was a mutual decision. Whether Liverpool’s choice is related to fitness, tactical considerations or squad balance remains unclear, but supporters will inevitably question why a player of his stature has been overlooked.
