Lakers’ leaders know that each decision weighs heavily in their quest for a new title. Summer has already been marked by strong choices, but reflection on the future does not stop there. The organization now seems ready to consider more daring than expected adjustments.
According to journalist Marc Stein, the Californian franchise had initially set a clear limit: to avoid adding contracts going beyond the 2025-26 season. However, this cautious approach would have evolved somewhat in recent weeks. The idea is to remain competitive immediately, while keeping a certain financial flexibility for the future.
It is with this in mind that a profile attracts attention: Andrew Wiggins. The Miami Heat winger, often quoted in rumors, could correspond to what Los Angeles is looking for. Stein explains that “Lakers want a player capable of providing guarantees on both sides of the field and raising their collective ceiling in the short term”. Wiggins, under contract at 28.2 million this season, has a Player option of 30.2 million for 2026-27.
An ideal target to strengthen the wing?
This summer, the Lakers have already strengthened their workforce with Deandre Ayton, Marcus Smart and Jake Laravia, while losing Dorian Finney-Smith, who went to Houston. But the potential arrival of a player from the Wiggins caliber, NBA champion and versatile defender, would represent a completely different level of ambition. For the moment, Miami seems determined to keep it at least at the start of the season, but discussions could evolve during the year.
The file is all the more sensitive since the franchise has secured one of its pillars. Luka Dončić has signed a three -year extension for $ 165 million, thus consolidating his role of central figure in the project. At the same time, the leaders keep in mind that LeBron James and Austin Reaves will be able to test the market of free agents in 2026, a deadline that is fraught with consequences for the balance of the workforce.
The interest in Wiggins shows that the Lakers do not want to be satisfied with a simple fit but a real rise in power. With Dončić installed over time, James always competitive and a solid workforce, the shooting window exists. It remains to be seen whether an exchange can be materialized to further strengthen the wing.
In the meantime, purple and gold are advancing cautiously but surely. The balance between immediate ambition and management of the future remains fragile, but the opening manifested vis-à-vis Wiggins could well announce a season rich in twists and turns on the transfer market.
