Basketball is taking root in Morocco with the official launch of the Junior NBA League Maroc in Laâyoune. This enterprising initiative, spearheaded by Mohammed VI University Polytechnique (UM6P) through its subsidiary Evosport, in collaboration with NBA Africa and the Act4community Phosboucraa program, aims to leverage the sport as a catalyst for education, inclusion, and athletic development.
The league is designed to foster the sustainable growth of sports within Morocco, with a projected reach of over 2,000 young athletes, both boys and girls aged 12 to 16. The program will span five key cities: Benguerre, Khouribga, El Jadida, Safi, and Laâyoune. Each city will host a league comprising 30 teams-15 male and 15 female-participating in a structured competition. Beyond the games, participants will engage in specialized training sessions and educational workshops, ensuring a holistic development experience.
A critical component of the program is the development of coaching talent. More than 50 coaches are slated to receive training and certification aligned with NBA standards, a move that could significantly elevate the quality of basketball instruction across the nation. stated ismail Lyoubi, the director general of Evosport, highlighting the local impact.He further emphasized the program’s potential: This program will offer high-level training to young people,while allowing the emergence of a pool of talent capable of radiating on a regional,national and international scale.
Lyoubi also acknowledged the crucial support from the Ministry of National Education, Preschool and Sports, as well as Act4community, for their role in deploying the program within local colleges and communities.
The presence of five-time NBA champion Ron Harper at the launch underscored the program’s aspirational goals. Harper shared his viewpoint, stating, This program aims to give children an opportunity to realize their dreams.
He drew a parallel to his own journey, noting, recalling having started like them and having had the chance to reach the heights, a chance that must be offered to all young people in the world.
