Union Sint-Gillis immediately set a statement in the Champions League with the 1-3 victory on PSV Eindhoven. Analysts wondered how that was possible, but Jan Mulder sees things much easier.
According to Mulder, the underestimation of Union is typically Belgian. “How is it possible? Our Unionneke, winning in Eindhoven! Do another Duvel, Marcel”, it sounds There. “But the explanation is simple: Union has a better team than PSV. Only in Belgium does sports editors torment with that inferiority complex.”
Hard analysis of PSV
Mulder does not save the Dutch champion. “The defense of Union is much stronger than the little talented rear three, four or five from PSV. Put that list of Eindhoven school boys opposite the mighty Burgess and you know what time it is.”
The midfield of the Eindhoven team also gets along: “At PSV there are three of them, in a revolving door, they politely say ‘after you’. Schouten, Veerman and Saibari made it to one guy with raised sleeves: Kevin Mac Allister.”
Union knows how to do it
According to Mulder, the power of Union is also in the transfer policy. “After the sale of Vanzeir and Undav, they again achieved strikers from third divisions or for 50,000 euros somewhere from Baden-Württemberg. And each time those boys and they later leave for millions. At Union they know about football players.”
Finally, the former international criticizes the difference in perception between Belgian clubs. “Club Brugge gets more respect, while Jan Breydel is more dangerous than the Joseph Mariënstadion. Ajax, Twente and Frankfurt were played away by Union, but you still hear:” Do you have to see that stadium net! “”
