The cycling world is buzzing as the Israel-Premier Tech team faces a significant setback. What began as a veiled threat has now materialized into a concrete exclusion from the Gran Camiño stage, with implications that coudl extend to other races. This development marks a stark departure from the team’s previous participation and raises questions about their future in major cycling events.
Israel-Premier Tech Barred from Gran Camiño Amidst Growing Tensions
Following strong statements from Barcelona and Gran Canaria regarding the Tour de france and Vuelta a España, the situation for Israel-Premier Tech has escalated beyond mere words. The team has officially been excluded from the upcoming Gran Camiño stage, a race they were expected to contend, especially with Derek Gee poised to defend his victory. Gran Camiño, a relatively new addition to the cycling calendar, having only hosted Jonas vingegaard twice, is the first to take this decisive action against the Israeli squad.
The decision was announced by ezequiel Mosquera, race director of gran Camiño,shortly after a series of disruptive protests that marred this year’s Vuelta a España,even leading to the appeal of the final stage in Madrid. Mosquera emphasized the immediate need to prioritize the safety and integrity of the race.
“Now there is no time to think of a sports aspect, we have to think about the current situation,” Mosquera stated, highlighting the paramount importance of race security.
Mosquera further elaborated on the volatile atmosphere experienced during the Vuelta, describing it as a period of extreme stress for all involved.
“What happened during Vuelta was the situation of maximum stress for riders, director and organization. Such circumstances are very tough to manage,” he added.
Unlike teams affiliated with the WorldTour, Gran Camiño, as a non-WorldTour event, is not obligated to include Israel-Premier Tech in its starting roster. The decision was also influenced by local partners, La Coruña and Lugo, who provide financial backing for the race. Their potential withdrawal of support, should the team participate, played a crucial role in the final exclusion. This move by Gran Camiño sets a precedent, and cycling enthusiasts will be watching closely to see if other races follow suit.
