Gündoğan to Chelsea: Man City Exit & January Clash

Gundagan officially debuted at the Galatasaray.

The 34-year-old has signed a contract with the Turkish champion until the end of the 2026-27 season. Gündogan had a year of contract with the City, but he can leave, since the Turkish signing market is open until September 12.

In his farewell speech, Gundagan said that Manchester City will always occupy a special place in his heart. He added that his passage through the Etihad had brought him many unforgettable successes and memories, especially the season of the triplet in which he had the honor of captaining the team.

Guondogan emphasized that winning the Premier League and the FA Cup was extremely significant, but the time to lift the first champions league trophy of the club, in Istanbul, will remember it forever. He also said that he believes that City will continue to reap more successes and that he will observe his career in Türkiye from a distance, a country that has a special meaning for him.

Guondogan was the first signing of Pep Guardiola at the Man City in 2016, remaining seven years before moving to Barcelona in a free transfer in 2023. He returned to Etihad in August 2024, playing 33 games in the Premier League last season, helping the Man City to finish third.

Born in Gelsenkirchen, Germany, in a family of Turkish ancestry, Gündogan has won five Premier League titles with Manchester City, in addition to the Champions League 2022-23 trophy. He previously played at Bochum, Nuremberg and Borussia Dortmund.

The sports director Hugo Viana has insisted that Ilkay Gündogan is synonymous with the success of Manchester City and his legacy will never be forgotten. Without a doubt, you will receive a warm welcome when you return to Etihad with the Galatasaray in January for the Champions League group stage.
