Riga (dpa)-The German basketball players will meet Slovenia in the European Championship quarter-finals on Wednesday with NBA superstar Luka Doncic. The Slovenes prevailed in Riga in the round of 16 against Italy thanks to a new Gala performance by Doncic with 84:77 (50:40). Doncic scored 42 points, including 30 in the first two quarters.
In preparation, the German team had already played against Slovenia twice and won both duels. There had also been a German success on the way to the title at the 2023 World Cup. Germany is still unbeaten at this European Championship and goes to the quarter -finals as a favorite.
The next favorite is leaving
Meanwhile, the next co -favorite caught it. After defending champion Spain and Vice World Champion Serbia, France has also left. The silver medalist of the 2024 Olympic Games lost his round of 16 against outsiders Georgia in Riga with 70:80 (37:38) and thus missed the quarter -finals of the European Championship.
Georgia now meets Finland there. The Finns were sensational on Saturday Topplavorit Serbia around NBA superstar Nikola Jokic with 92:86. Spain, European Championship champion in Germany in 2022, had already left in the preliminary round.
The French, in which superstar Victor Wembanyama pauses this summer, showed a disappointing performance. The winner of the outsider duel Finland against Georgia could meet Germany in the semi-finals.
