Julian Nagelsmann had wished for emotionality. The national coach received emotionality. However, the path was a fairly further up to that double outbreak within three minutes when Nadiem Amiri and then Florian Wirtz to the German national football team against Northern Ireland shot a lead-heavy burden off his shoulders.
From 1: 1 Mach 3: 1 – that was a trend that still saved the football evening in Cologne from a German perspective, atmospheric, but above all sporty. Nagelsmann’s team has thus fulfilled his duty in the World Cup qualification three days after the self-exposed 0: 2 in Slovakia.
However, after the tour of Serge Gnabry in the 7th minute and the equalization by Isaac Price (34th), it was an excruciating matter for the Germans for a long time, in which they increasingly played against the 71st the world rankings against Tristesse and Treelessness before Amiri (69.) and Wirtz (72.) met.
Happy hands in changing
What could be held: that the national coach had a happy hand this time, at least with his handles during the game. Like a miraculous catalyst, Amiri and Maximilian Beier’s substitutes strengthened the delicate momentum that the Germans had developed in the middle of the second half, an intervention that, in particular, actively promoted the positive trend, especially Amiri. However, it still has to be shown whether this also applies to the big picture. It continues against Luxembourg and Belfast against Northern Ireland in October.
First of all, the relief was great, after a week full of conversations that Nagelsmann had reported about before the game at the RTL microphone. The result was a half-new team, the national coach filled five out of ten field positions. Collins, Tah, Mittelstädt, Stiller and Goretzka had to vacate their place, but Anton, Koch, Room, Groß and Leweling were there.
This was accompanied by a structural change, from the 4-2-3-1 formation to a 3-4-3. The associated plan was recognizable early. It was about getting forward and pace quickly, with small-small in midfield (you could also say: creativity) the Germans did not stay long. From the triple chain with Rüdiger, Anton and Koch, or from the center of Kimmich, the ball was sent to the long journey towards Northern Irish goal, where players like Leweling, Gnabry or Wirtz started at high speed.

The early leadership then also came from this urge to the vertical, but starting from a kick -off of the northern Irish. After the conquest of the ball, Woltemade, with a little luck, was the one who set the direction: steeply on Gnabry, who ran on goalkeeper Peacock-Farrell alone and gave him no chance in his placed, sensible end to the left corner.
Including poverty in lunar eclipse
In the very distant football year 2019, at the last meeting with the Northern Irish to date, Gnabry contributed three goals in the 6-1 in Frankfurt. But on this late summer evening in 2025, with the natural spectacle of the lunar eclipse above the Cologne stadium, little of further goals indicated despite the successful start.
For a short time, the Germans tried to expand the lead, Woltemade missed the right moment at the end of Gnabry after preparatory work. After that, however, there was largely impaired poverty – and at the same time by no means the stability that Nagelsmann is so urgently looking for.

The calling from Groß to the side of Kimmich in the center, instead of Stiller, should serve this goal. But then after a good half an hour it was two supposed stabilizers who undermined the goal, which has recently been questionable in question, rüdiger (who will be lacking against Luxembourg yellow-locked). The result was a corner kick for Northern Ireland, in which Gnabry then inexplicably stopped the coverage of cover when Price met steel and worth seeing by direct acceptance.
Thousands of whistles for the break
It was no wonder that this goal was not good for the German game. The error rate rose again with the uncertainty and with some passport that came to misunderstanding, further mischief. A direct hit from room shortly before the break was not a mood for the mood because of offside, and at the latest when referee Eskas whistled for the break, thousands also did the forces in the stands.
It was an atmospheric alarm signal after the audience had previously received the team benevolently and accompanied patiently for a long time.
Nagelsmann waived a personnel reaction. The audience once again gave the Germans loan, but in a playful way, nothing turned out for the better. With a courageous attempt, Leweling provided a little ray of hope, but all in all the big question hung above the stadium, from where only the urgently needed impulse should come here.
After an hour, the national coach Beier and Amiri brought for Woltemade and Gnabry. Amiri immediately introduced herself with a chance of shooting, and somehow the Germans seemed to grasp the favor of the moment. A little luck was in the game when goalkeeper Peacock-Farrell misjudged, so that Amiri suddenly unexpectedly had free rail to the empty goal.
But at that moment the hit also looked like the rewarded reward for a not inspired but persistent performance. The fact that this was even refined had to do again with Amiri, who took out a free kick. Then it was the sensitivity of Wirtz that sent the ball to an irresistible flight curve.
