Germany EuroBasket: Path to Group Win & What It Means

Basketball-EM
This is how Germany becomes group winner – and that would bring it

Four clear victories and not yet group winners: What Germany’s basketball players need at the European Championship to consolidate first place.

The brilliant 120: 57 of the German basketball players against Great Britain pulverized various EM records: Highest EM victory since 1969, most of the points of a team since 1995 and the clearest success of a German team in EM history. What Dennis Schröder and Co. has not yet sure after the game against helpless British is the group victory, which was first declared.

This must now be made perfect against host Finland on Wednesday (7.30 p.m./RTL and Magenta Sport). The scenarios around Germany (four victories and zero defeats) as well as Lithuania and Finland (both three victories and one defeat) before the preliminary round ended in the Finnish tampere.

So Germany becomes group winner

Everything is clear with a win against Finland. If Lithuania win before (3:30 p.m.) against Sweden, Germany would also meet a defeat with up to ten points. In this case, there would be a three -man comparison, in which Germany has so far been at +19 points and Finland after the defeat against Lithuania at -3.

So Germany becomes second or third

With a defeat against Finland when Lithuania previously loses against Sweden. Then Germany and Finland each have four victories, but the host would be at the front of the direct comparison. If Germany loses a difference against Finland with twelve or more points, group square one is gone anyway. In the event of a defeat with eleven points, it depends on the baskets achieved in the direct duels.

In theory, Germany can even become third. However, a defeat with 36 points difference or more would be necessary – in addition, Lithuania would have to defeat the Swedes.

That would bring the group victory

A simpler start to the final round in Riga. As a group winner, the round of 16 against Portugal or Estonia – an unpleasant duel with host Latvia would be waiting directly from second place.

In addition, as a group winner, Germany could most likely avoid Topfavorit Serbia until the final. In the worst case from the German perspective, the duel can even exist in the round of 16: Serbia would have to lose his game against Turkey and become second in group – and Germany slip from first place to third place.
