The German basketball players have reached the quarter -finals of the European Championship. They won 85:58 (31:32) against outsider Portugal.
The first half was much worse than expected for the German team around captain Dennis Schröder. In the meantime, Portugal was even in front. Germany only increased significantly in the fourth quarter and thus secured the move into the quarter -finals. The best throwers in the German team were Franz Wagner and Dennis Schröder with 16 points each.
Germany meets the winner of the round of 16 between Italy and Slovenia this Sunday (5:45 p.m.). The quarter -finals will then take place on Wednesday (4 p.m. or 8 p.m.).
So far weakest tournament performance
After five clear victories in the preliminary round, the difficult victory over Portugal in Germany was the weakest performance in the previous tournament. “Not everything can always run smoothly,” said captain Schröder after the game. The Portuguese had not scored more than 70 points in any of their five preliminary round games.
In the first round of 16 of the day, Turkey moved into the quarter-finals of a Casketball European Championship for the first time in 16 years. They defeated the team from Sweden with 85:79. The Turks meet the winner of the encounter between Poland and Bosnia and Herzegovina in the quarterfinals.
