Evenepoel & Palf: Post-Action Exchange

Remco Evenepoel has a successful return in the Tour of Britain, where he managed to win the queen stage of Saturday, among other things. Although in the same ride he was also noticed in a much less beautiful way.

Unsporting behavior

Before Evenepoel managed to sprint towards the victory, there was a very unsporting maneuver (see below) of our countryman. During the chase to the front runners, he squeezed his brakes closed when a Tudor rider did not want to take over, an action that was labeled by many as outrageous.

The competition jury also intervened afterwards: Evenepoel was fined 100 Swiss francs and lost 10 UCI points. However, he managed to escape with a pretty slight punishment. This is how Philippe Gilbert, who took the behavior of Evenepoel on the grain at ‘Dans Le Peloton’, a cycling bar show at RTL.

Gilbert does a great deal

The former world champion did not have a magazine and condemned the action of Evenepoel sharply: “You really can’t do this. As suddenly, braking is unacceptable,” Gilbert got off. “There are rules in the peloton. You do not inhibit just before an opponent. Especially in the final the road is quite wide. You do not inhibit an opponent, because then you endanger others.”

“The commissioners were very mild,” Gilbert continued. To which he was referring to the fact that, according to him, a (much) heavier sanction could certainly have been. Former rider Kevin van Melsen was also of the same opinion.

“It is a gesture that we should not see in the peloton. For the same money there is a fall, and of course we would rather not see that happening. I hope he will think about this again in the future,” he said.
