This story begins with a shock. And about a massive, sudden increase in fees at home. At the end of June, the (SPÖ) mayor of Wilhelmsburgthe mid-small Lower Austrian community in which I live, over their WhatsApp channel to the residents. In an Instagram-compatible video, Peter Reitzner soberly tells what is: that the local council decided yesterday. That the municipality is missing 50,000 euros annually for the maintenance and renovation of the water and sewage network. That this shortfall was calculated by an engineering office and with the participation of the state of Lower Austria. “Of course it is clear that nobody is happy about an increase in fees, but it has to be,” says the mayor.
