Serious allegations against the Los Angeles Clipperers: The NBA franchise is said to have deliberately avoided the “Salary Cap” salary limit of the North American basketball league. In addition to his regular content, superstar Kawhi Leonard received $ 28 million for a job that he did not do – the well -networked journalist Pablo Torre reported on his podcast “Pablo Torre Finds Out” on Wednesday.
In his report, the journalist quoted legal documents, according to which Leonard was paid through an insolvent company called Aspiration, for which the Clipper’s owner and well-known US billionaire Steve Ballmer acted as an investor. Leonard is said to have signed an advertising contract for nine months after the signature of his game contract ($ 176.3 million in four years) – but ultimately never advertised for the company.
According to the Podcaster, a source from the company’s environment reports that this was done for the ground, the salary limit to avoid, which had prevented Leonard’s higher contract. Leonard, who won the NBA title with the San Antonio Spurs and the Toronto Raptors, switched to the Clipperers in 2019 to play in his hometown. He accepted an offer that earned him a lower salary when it would have been possible with his previous team in Toronto. In 2024 he signed a new contract that will bring him $ 153 million in three years.
The Clippers have already reacted to the allegations and rejected them. “Neither Herr Ballmer nor the Clipperers avoided the salary upper limit or behaved incorrectly in any way in connection with aspiration,” it said in a message. Every opposite claim is “demonstrably wrong”. The NBA initially did not comment on the case, as ESPN reported on Wednesday evening.
