What does Jusuf Gazibegovic have to do with Austria Salzburg? In any case, more than the common football fan can think.
The now Cologne team is mainly associated in Austria with Sturm Graz and Red Bull Salzburg or Cooperation Association FC Liefering-after all, he was trained in the Red Bull Academy.
But his very first steps in club football took Gazibegovic in Violett, before he moved to the city rival’s academy in 2011 at the age of eleven.
The hope of “cool derbies”
In conversation with Eirala1 makes Gazibegovic clear that he connects a lot with both clubs. “I know that this is not an easy topic. I am very, very grateful to both clubs. It’s just really cool to have two such clubs in the city,” he says.

On Sunday Liefering and Austria Salzburg meet in the derby (from 10:30 a.m. in the live stream at Laola1). If it goes to Gazibegovic, the game is just a foretaste of what could come in the future.
“Austria Salzburg is of course also a very cool club. When I got there, Austria was the hottest thing for me.”

Because the 25-year-old wishes the violets where the “old” Austria once caused a sensation. “I hope you make it to the Bundesliga at some point. That would be very cool derbies.”
“Why do so many people come to the stadium here?”
He still likes to think back about his time at Austria. “Austria Salzburg is of course also a very cool club. When I got there, Austria was the hottest thing for me.”
The mood in the Maxglaner stadium was taken with it quickly. In 2009, when Gazibegovic kicked offspring as a child in the purple, Austria still played in the Landesliga.
“I thought: Why are there so many people here? Of course I thought that was cool,” he recalls. The slogan is emblazoned in large letters above the fan stand behind the gate: “Austria will survive you all”. The saying is still in memory of Gazibegovic. “They live that too and I think that’s really cool,” he explains.
Today the violets are back in professional football – and if you continue to show such achievements, this will also be the case in the coming season. A derby victory against Liefering would not only be sporty when it comes to relegation, but also mentally a huge step in the right direction.
