Michael van Gerwen has qualified for the second round of the World Series Finals. The darter from Vlijmen was in Amsterdam in a high-quality opening party with 6-5 too strong for Wessel Nijman.
In the next round, 36-year-old Van Gerwen faces the Englishman Rob Cross of Haupai Puha from New Zealand. Kevin Doets and Danny Noppert also qualified for the second round.
The meeting between Van Gerwen and Nijman was one of the two Dutch entrepreneurs in the first round of the final tournament, which will be finished this weekend for the fifth year in a row in the AFAS Live.
In Nijman, Van Gerwen met someone who is 36 places lower on the world ranking (3 to 39), but due to his recent moderate form he started the opening party as an underdog.
The triple world champion has had a tough year and reached only once in the previous eight tournaments than the second round. Partly due to a divorce and a sick father, he decided to put darts on a side track in recent months.
It was therefore the question of how he would look. Van Gerwen immediately had to take a break, but fought nicely back in the game. He consulted a high average (104.75 per three arrows), but saw how Nijman remained clear on the doubles.
Row
With a 4-3 deficit Van Gerwen noted a beautiful 132 finish: a few Bull, Triple-19 and Bullseye. He then survived a match arrow by Nijman, who missed a double for the first time in the game. In the decisive leg he took the victory by touching the double-18.
