Andreas Almgren 5000m DQ: “No Pressure

19 SEPTEMBER 2025 | 11:31

The bronze medalist at 10,000 meters, Andreas Almgren, misses the World Cup final at 5000 meters after quitting nine in the trial race. “The legs were not there today unfortunately. It did not feel good,” says Andreas, a European record holder in the distance.

At the Bauhaus gala in early summer, Tureberg runner Andreas Almgren improved the European record of 5000 meters to 12: 44.27. In the trials at the Tokyo World Cup, a top eight placement was required to reach the final.

In the first of two experimental heat, with 20 runners on the starting line, Almgren was seven initially. After just over 2000 meters he advanced to third place and with five laps he left in the lead, where he raised the speed significantly.

When three turns remained, twelve runners remained in the sealing cluster. Out on the last lap, Almgren was passed by American Nico Young and lost ground. At the rally, he looked to be able to cope with a top eight placement, but stumbled and finished nine at 13: 16.38.

– This is the first time I test a double and it really sits in my legs. It felt good on the warm -up and at the beginning of the race but then there was no pressure, says Andreas Almgren to SVT after the race.

– The plan was to turn up the last five laps and that we would be eight that went loose. But instead, I felt it didn’t work. The legs were not there today unfortunately. It didn’t feel good.
