2026 World Cup: Uruguay, Paraguay & Colombia Qualify

Uruguay qualified Thursday for the 2026 World Cup by beating Peru. While Colombia defeated Bolivia on the same score, Paraguay has confirmed its place in the World Cup with a draw against the equator.

The Uruguay team of Marcelo Bielsa qualified for the 2026 World Cup by beating Peru 3-0 at home Thursday, while Colombia defeated Bolivia on the same score.

Paraguay has also confirmed its place in the World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico with a 0-0 home match against the already qualified equator. Brazil and Argentina, reigning champion, had already qualified for 2026 in South America.

Predictable qualification

In front of 60,000 spectators gathered in the crowded stadium of Centenario in Montevideo, Rodrigo Aguirre opened the scoring for Uruguay in the 14th minute. The club’s striker jumped higher than everyone to place a powerful head in the firefly of the Peruvian goalkeeper Pedro Gallese. The Uruguayans only needed one point to qualify.

The qualification was predictable in a system where six of the ten teams of the Conmebol qualify automatically for 2026, and another participant in an intercontinental dam.

Colombia has also ensured its place at the World Cup thanks to a comfortable victory against Bolivia. James Rodriguez, the former striker of Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, 34, a rising star of the 2014 World Cup, scored just after the half hour of play. Krasnodar striker Jhon Cordoba assured the victory by scoring in the 74th minute, before Juan Fernando Quintero brought the scoring to 3-0.

Like Uruguay, Paraguay only needed a draw against Ecuador to qualify. He fulfilled his mission and will participate in his ninth World Cup.
