Wimbledon quarter-finalist Laura Siegemund lost in the third round of the US Open against the world ranking twelfth Jekaterina Alexandrowa. Siegemund remained without a chance with 0: 6, 1: 6. The 37-year-old thus missed the round of 16 and was the last of three German participants in the individual competition of the Grand Slam tournament in New York.
The first eight games all went to Alexandrowa. A break to 1: 2 in the second set gave the German camp again hope. But the pressure in the Russian favorites’ strokes was too high for victory and ultimately remained without a chance. After only 60 minutes, Alexandrowa used her first match ball to win.
Hope for progress in doubles
After the end of Eva Lys in round two and Tatjana Maria in round one, none of the three German tennis players are there in the single round of ultimate. The victory is still in New York: In doubles, the Metzinger with the Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia is in the second round. Siegemund had won the US Open title in doubles in 2020.
