Indian shuttlers have been handed tough draws at BWF World Championships, set to be played between August 25 and 31 in Paris. The hallowed halls of the Adidas Arena (La Chapelle) once again stare down at the Indian stars, who failed to win a single medal at the Paris Olympics last year, returning empty-handed for the first time since Beijing Olympics in 2008.
In Paris 2024, India went into the competition with high hopes of winning more than a medal. Having just won the Thomas Cup, and with Lakshya Sen and former world No.1s Satwiksairaj Rankireddy/Chirag Shetty in peak form, it appeared as if India would end their wait for a gold medal. But, in sport, nothing is guaranteed.
Satwik and Chirag bowed out in the quarterfinals, losing to one of their familiar foes. Lakshya, leading 7-0 against then-world No.1 Viktor Axelsen in the semi-final, crashed and burned.
A year down, things are a little different. There are barely any expectations from the Indian contingent. The lack of faith is because of the inconsistent form of the senior India players, who have not won a single big title in the last year. Satwik-Chirag and Lakshya have struggled with injury concerns, hampering their form in the lead-up to the mega event.
Difficult Draws in BWF World Championships

The situation has been made more difficult by the fact that both of India’s top medal hopes in any tournament have been drawn into tough games. Lakshya faces World No.1 Shi Yuqi in his very first game, while Satwik/Chirag are likely to face World No.6 Liang Keng and Wang Chang in Round 3.
However, Badminton Association of India (BAI) secretary Sanjay Mishra sees the tough draws as a good thing. It is the ‘World Championships’ he says, you have to expect tough draws.
“World Championship means that the top players will be there. If they are able to beat the top player at the start, the draw gets easier for them. Lakshya is playing Shi Yuqi in the first round. Lakshya, on his day, can beat anyone in the world. Yes, he is struggling with form recently but that is down to his injuries. He can make a comeback at any moment. He has beaten Shi Yuqi before and he can do it again,” BAI secretary tells India Today in an exclusive interview.
Mishra reveals that Lakshya is over his injury concerns, and if he gets his confidence back, he can hit peak in the World Championships in Paris this year.
“Lakshya has struggled with fitness due to multiple injuries. I spoke to him some time back. He said that he was back in full fitness and just needed to get his confidence back. At this level, confidence can make a huge difference. Once he regains that I think he will become a world beater again. He might make his comeback in the World Championships,” Mishra says.
While India might have struggled in the recent past, it is important to remember that every day is not going to be a good day for the players, reminds the BAI secretary.
“I think that the fans need to understand that every day is not a Sunday. You win some and you lose some. You need a little bit of luck in big tournaments like World Championships, All England and the Olympics,” he states.
With the tournament only a week away, Mishra hopes that the struggling Indian contingent will hit their best form, attain their peaks in the World Championships. In 2021, India won two medals, in 2023, they won one. In fact, India has come back with at least one medal from each edition in the last 15 years.
As the tournament nears, one hopes that lightning does not strike in Paris twice again.
