In addition to sponsoring the sport, Company reinforces commitment to social projects linked to sports
Zurich Seguros announces its entry into the universe of Brazilian Football Flag, a sport derived from football, but of reduced physical contact, safer, very simple to play, which grows rapidly among young people in Brazil and worldwide.
Sponsorship of the sport is part of Zurich’s strategy to promote sports that stimulate social development, diversity and quality of life, especially young people. The insurer is also one of the first companies to support the sport, which should advance further with the debut as an Olympic sport at the Los Angeles Games in 2028. It is expected to have the same impact as skateboarding in Tokyo in 2020.
“For us, investing in Flag Football is investing in a more inclusive and promising future, because the sport is all about Zurich’s pillars: it is diverse, democratic, affordable and has a strong connection with young people,” says Lucía Sarraceno, director of marketing and clients at Zurich Seguros. For the executive, “Support for Flag Football is a strategic choice that allows us to use sport as a social transformation platform.”
Zurich will invest, through sponsorship of the Brazilian Football Confederation, in strengthening Brazilian teams-male and female-, in the development of national championships, and the expansion of sports-related social projects, replicating the successful model already adopted in tennis, through the Sponsorship of Rio Open and support to the next generation institute.
“When we look at the Football flag, we see much more than a sport. It’s a modality that talks directly with Zurich DNA, because it is an inclusive and optimistic vision for the future,” says Sandra Lima, Zurich Seguros Superintendent of Communication and Marketing.
According to the executive, the sport does not require sophisticated equipment and anyone can play, regardless of gender, physical size or age. “It is democratic and is increasingly associated with a more stripped lifestyle. And curiously, there is a very relevant protagonism of women, since, currently, the Brazilian female team is the most outstanding in the international scene,” adds Sandra.
How is the game
In the flag, opponents are not knocked down, players must remove a flag (a ribbon attached to the waist) to interrupt the play. The sport is safe, dispenses with the use of protective equipment, such as helmets and shoulder pads, attracting different profiles of participants. In Brazil, it emerged in the late 1990s, and today has more than 1,600 men’s athletes and 1,000 women’s athletes, which means that women represent 38.5% of federated athletes, a very expressive index compared to other modalities such as football and basketball, which are still predominantly male.
“We are talking about a modern, inclusive and affordable sport that grows exponentially. Flag has everything to consolidate itself as a new national passion – and the support of companies like Zurich is critical to accelerating this process,” says Cris Kajiwara, president of the Brazilian Football Confederation.
With this initiative, Zurich expands its performance in sport in Brazil, strengthening its commitment to causes that generate value for society and drive development, diversity and positive impact.
