Former Go Ahead Eagles goalkeeper Peter Rufai died at the age of 61. The Nigerian Football Association announced this on X. The 70-time international of Nigeria was under the bar in Deventer in the 1993/1994 season.
After a few successful years, Rufai signed in Belgium with Go Ahead, which at the time was led by Henk ten Cate. In the spring of 1994, Rufai traveled to the national team of Nigeria without permission from the club to participate in the Africa Cup.

But perhaps the most remarkable story in the life of Rufai did not take place within the lines. He was the son of a regional tribal king and at his death in 1998 he was asked to succeed his father. He kindly rejected the range.
With Rufai in the goal, Nigeria, who was coached by the Dutch Clemens Westerhof, won the tournament. The keeper merged with the party and would never return to Go Ahead. As a result, the counter in Deventer remained in front of him on twelve duels.
Rufai, nicknamed ‘Dodo Mayana’, was under the bar during his career at eleven football clubs. In addition to Go Ahead, he was active at SK Lokeren and KSK Beveren, as well as a few clubs in Spain and Portugal. With the Nigerian team he was active at two world championships.
In 2017 we published a final signal episode about Peter Rufai:
