SAat many badminton fans criticized the decline of Indonesian badminton achievements, Eng Hian, Head of the Achievement Division of the Central Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI). Especially after the Indonesia Open 2025 at Istora Senayan Jakarta which ended without the title brought by the Indonesian team.
Eng Hian, 48, said PBSI Chairperson Fadil Imran invited all Federation officials to find the root of the problem and the solution. The results of their evaluation find the main factor in the decline of Indonesian badminton achievement is the slow regeneration. “The faster the regeneration, it means that the active period of players is getting longer,” said Eng Hian at the PBSI Pelatnas Cipayung, East Jakarta, on Friday, June 20, 2025.
Another problem is the presence of a number of new coaches who require an adaptation period and have an impact on the training pattern. The 2004 Olympic bronze medalist received reporters TempoBagus Personal, in the PBSI Pelatnas. In the 40 -minute interview, Eng Hian described the PBSI road map boosted Indonesian badminton achievements.

Why do you highlight the problem of communication as an initial cause of declining Indonesian badminton achievements?
Both sides, coaches and athletes, need to both understand the goals, needs, and targets in the preparation of training programs and matches. The problem of communication there.
What is the current condition?
From our view in the field, communication is still not synchronous. There are some athletes, especially elite players, need time to better understand new coaches. The new coach means the system and the new training pattern. This is adapted, both by coaches and athletes.
This obstacle occurs at the elite level?
Yes. At the level of pratama and acceleration athletes, communication is already quite good. There are no obstacles.
The results of the PBSI evaluation concluded that there was a decline in achievement?
Regarding achievement, PBSI was highlighted from the highest level results. At the pratama level, our target is to win the super 100 level tournament and it is fulfilled. But that is not seen because the public only sees at the super 500 level and above. This is not in line with expectations.
What are the PBSI targets for this year?
When talking about PBSI’s milestone, of course the tournament that is held with us as host. At the beginning of the year, there was Indonesia Masters. Which was just finished last June, there was Indonesia Open. Outside the tournament as the host, there is an All England. In August, there is a world championship. That is our main target. In addition, there is another BWF (World Badminton Federation) tournament. We must be able to see which priority is to achieve that target.
What number is a priority?
When talking about development, even in the men’s doubles the men’s should not be bad. They entered the final round five times. But the public is always the champion. Indeed this must be improved so that the men’s doubles sector which is the mainstay of Indonesia can immediately win the title in the next tournament. There are tournaments in Japan, China, and of course the world championship. Our closest program to achieve the target is the world championship.
You mentioned that the new coach had an impact on the training pattern ….
I want to emphasize that they are arguably really new to the elite team. There are limitations. Still cannot maximally encourage his athletes to follow all the rules and will of the coach. The reason, athlete background. There are players who feel number one. Actually this is not allowed. So, if this problem has been passed, I’m sure we will return to achievement.
That is, a number of coaches have not been able to encourage players to exert their best abilities?
Yes. Then I say there is still something limiting. The coach still sees, “Wow, this is the top player, yes.” If pushed, athletes will refuse later. If it is not pushed, the training is not optimal. That’s the obstacle now.
What number of obstacles occurred in?
We’re talking about the men’s doubles, yes. In another number, the problem is different. The mainstay of the men’s singles, Anthony Sinisuka Ginting, is still in recovery of injuries since the beginning of the year. In women’s singles, Gregoria Mariska Tunjung in recent months is also hampered by health problems. Our mainstay is only in the men’s doubles. While there is a barrier to the constraints earlier. Hopefully, after we conduct an evaluation, the coach can find solutions and athletes can accept the coach input.
If athletes and coaches accept each other, the problem is solved?
The way is already there, but of course we need support from us so that athletes better understand their goals in Pelatnas. So participating in the tournament is not just maintaining ranking. The mindset must be changed. Join the tournament to win the title.
When male and female singles players are free from injury, achievement can increase?
Achieved the title in the previous big tournaments from whom? The person is all right. Besides Ginting, there is Jonatan Christie alias Jojo in men’s singles. Ginting, Jojo, Gregoria is married. There are things they have to live.

In your opinion, family athletes minimal achievement?
If you say it has no effect, yes, that’s the opinion of people. Free. We who see here are limits here. They can’t be like before. So, how? With this condition, we must prepare the next generation. Can not always rely on senior players. It’s time to regenerate.
What is the readiness of the players under them?
Still in process. Keep in mind, the process of Jojo and Ginting since 2014. Not suddenly getting a title. We want Alwi Farhan, 20 years old, can become a champion in Japan Open (15-20 July 2025). Is that possible? May be.
PBSI plans to do promotions and degradation. What is the process?
This is a new plan. If degradation, of course seen from the main performance indicators or the KPI is not achieved. Promotion is seen from the potential of national series.
What are the benchmarks?
Based on the PBSI program. Later, see the target coach, accordingly or not. This will be an evaluation material to take steps who will get promotions and degradation. ●
