The massacre continues in Wimbledon! The Roland-Garros Coco Gauff (No. 2) champion was defeated in the 1st round on Wimbledon’s lawn.
Three times 8th finalist in Church Road, the 21-year-old bowed 7-6 (7/3) 6-1 on the court No. 1 ahead of the Ukrainian Dayana Yastremska (WTA 42), after less than 80 minutes of play. She had already been beaten as soon as she entered the Berlin lawn for her 1st match from her Parisian coronation.
“I don’t want to scratch myself from the lawn card so early in my career, but it is certain that I have to make changes if I want to be successful here”said Gauff. It is only the 3rd time in the open era that the Roland-Garros winner bowed the same year in the first round of Wimbledon after the Belgian Justine Henin in 2005 and the Italian Francesca Schiavone in 2010.
The elimination of Coco Gauff is added to those of Jessica Pegula (No 3), Zheng Qinweng (No. 5) and Paola Badosa (No 9) among the first 10 series of the female table. Among the gentlemen, it is also 4 of the first 10 series heads that have already bitten dust.
