Twins, Riders & Calling: A Unique Path

Borja and Carlos García Sánchez son Twin Brothers, Valencians and riders by vocation. They rode on horseback for the first time with just four years and have now been summoned by the Royal Spanish Equestrian Federation for the European Children Championship in Riesenbeck that will be played on July 7 to 13.

The Spanish youth team that will compete in Germany for them together with Uxue ruins with “Clarín de Llamosa”, Carlos Borho with “Goja 27” y Lucía Fernández with “Sir Thomas Ps”. Borja will ride a “Nen cool the muse”a young horse with which he has a very good connection, and Carlos will do it with “Coree”your trusted mare.

“It all started any Sunday, when we were four years old: we went with the family to eat at a restaurant where there were horses, we took a small walk and that marked us,” they remember. They started with ponies and soon the first competitions arrived: in 2014, with six years, they competed in Castellón. In his first Spanish pony championship in 2016, Borja won and Carlos was second.

In 2018 they left the ponies and started riding horses. In 2019 they already got on the podium of the Spanish Championship of fry with the Valencian Community team. That year, Carlos won the Princess of Asturias trophy with his “conquering” mare. In 2020, Carlos was runner -up in Spain Children and in 2021 both competed in their first cups of nations in Wierden, Gorla Minore and Cabourg. That same season participated in their first European championship in Vilamoura.

Carlos and Borja have very different personalities on the track. “There has never been rivalry between us. On the contrary, we are the greatest support of the other. Of course, on the track we are very competitive. In competition, there is no mercy,” they admit with a smile. Carlos highlights his brother “the constancy and passion with which this sport lives every day.” Borja acknowledges that “Carlos is a very dedicated and competitive person, an example of daily effort.” They need each other and do not imagine their respective trajectories without the other.

Borja currently competes with “Warrior”, with which he has been forming a binomial since 2019, “Cronos d’Elle” and “Nen Toffe de Mue”, his most recent incorporation, with which he has already achieved a fourth place in the Junior Grand Prix of the Csio de Zuidwolde. Carlos has “Citing du Breche”, “Coree” and the young “Lyr Hellat”.

“We are very excited to compete in the European. It is a huge pride and it is even more special for being able to live together,” they confess. The brothers compete this weekend at the CSN5* of Moura Tours as a last preparation before the championship. Later they will travel to Barbizon, to the facilities of Edouard Coupérie, a family closely linked to their coach, Miguel Yen, where they will spend a few days before leaving for Germany. At this point, Borja and Carlos add: “We want to thank Antonio Moura and Carolina Fontaneda for having made their magnificent facilities available to us and being able to prepare the European Championship.”

The architect of the technical and mental progress of the twins has a name: Miguel Yen. For Carlos and Borja, he is more than a coach: “Miguel does not need to get on the horse to teach you. He is a sage of sport. Quiet, demanding and perfectionist. In competition it is that voice that motivates you and makes you always see the positive side. For us, he is no longer only a coach, but a very important person at a personal level.”

Miguel Yen’s trajectory endorses him as one of Spain’s best coaches. The Asturian has guided Carmen García Poncela, champion of Spain Junior and participant in three Europeans; Teresa Arias Cueva, who participated in two European championships and was a national medalist in Junior and young riders of Spain; To Charo Ortells Torregrosa, who has competed up to 1.60 in large awards such as Gijón and La Coruña, in addition to having jumped into three European championships; Ignacio Ferreras, who was a medal in the Spanish Championship and participated in two Europeans; OA Ángel Bailo, winner of the Santander International Grand Prix. He was also involved in the initial formation of Julio Arias Cueva.
