Teh championship banners are hung, the confetti swept away, and it’s back to the grind. HC Kometa Brno has already launched its summer training program on May 26th under the guidance of a new fitness coach. Head Coach kamil Pokorný recently discussed the team’s plans, areas for potential roster upgrades, and his outlook on the increased media and fan attention.
How did you unwind after the intensity of the championship run?
“I spent a week on a beach vacation and then explored Budapest with my wife and family,” Pokorný said. “I definitely got the rest I needed. The summer is a different beast than the season. I think my body recovered from the strain.”
What’s the current training schedule, and when did the team reconvene?
“We got back together on may 26th,” Pokorný explained. “Many players have individual training regimens outlined in their contracts, so they’re already working – we know who and how.The guys working with fitness coaches Tomáš Hron and Honza sedláček are under daily supervision. They’re training three times a week in two sessions, and I believe the program is exceptionally well-structured.”
“The guys are training three times a week in two sessions, and I believe the program is exceptionally well-structured.”
Does the extended season complicate the planning process?
“The players will have a brief respite in July,” Pokorný noted. “We’ll train until the 14th, then they’ll have ten days off before we hit the ice.”
How does this year’s preparation differ from previous years? The new fitness coach, Tomáš Hron, has a background in Muay Thai…
“Naturally, there are some variations in exercises and specific details, but Tomáš Hron also emphasizes running, so the players are doing plenty of that. There’s also an element of ‘hidden fitness’ that the players enjoy, which is boxing in the gym. they really push themselves, and I think they find it enjoyable. The gym work focuses on the same muscle groups, but the exercises vary in some details. I believe the preparation is well-rounded. Every fitness coach has their own approach, but ultimately, you’ll find that players achieve similar fitness levels.”

Can you build upon last year’s summer training program led by Hana bubníková? the players seemed very well-prepared physically.
“We were physically well-prepared; we had no issues in that area, and the players consistently showed a high level of commitment. It’s also somewhat related to mental fortitude. When you’re playing well and getting results, fatigue takes a backseat. Hanka Bubníková initiated the program last year but stepped down at her request. Then Iity (Martin Itherský, ed.) came, bringing his protégé Honza Sedláček, who assisted him, and now Tomáš Hron has taken over.”
Do you participate in the players’ training, or are you primarily observing and monitoring?
“I don’t participate directly. Unfortunately, my knee and other physical limitations prevent me from doing so. I’ve played enough in my life. Now I focus on guiding the team and ensuring everything runs smoothly.”
What positions do you want to strengthen?
“We are always looking for quality players. We will see what the market offers. We are missing a right-handed defender, but it is indeed challenging to find him.we will also see how the situation develops with the boys who are on the draft. We will be smarter in a few weeks.”
Are you planning to involve any of the junior players in the “A” team?
“We definitely want to involve them. Some of them have already practiced with us.We will see how they show up in preparation. It is indeed up to them. Summer preparation is long, and it is up to them to impose themselves.”
How do you perceive the increased interest from the media and the public?
“It’s definitely more intense now. But I’ve been in Brno for a long time, so I’m used to it. I don’t follow the media much, but I notice it.It’s part of the job,and I accept it.”
What do you think about the changes in the extra league?
“I don’t want to comment on that. I’m not in charge of that. It’s up to someone else.”
What would you say to the fans?
“I would like to thank them for their support. They are great and we appreciate them very much. We will do our best to make them happy again.”

The search for a right-handed defenseman is a common need across hockey leagues, reflecting the strategic advantage such players bring to power plays and defensive zone breakouts. The integration of junior players into the “A” team mirrors the development systems of teams like the Detroit Red Wings, known for their commitment to nurturing young talent. The coach’s measured response to media attention is reminiscent of seasoned NHL coaches like Jon cooper, who prioritize team focus over external distractions. This approach ensures that the team remains grounded and focused on its goals, despite the increased pressure and expectations that come with success.

Fresh off a successful season, Coach Pokorný is facing the challenges of off-season roster adjustments and the unexpected glare of the media spotlight. In a recent interview, he addressed key departures, potential new signings, and the whirlwind of attention that followed the team’s achievements. For American hockey fans, this is akin to an NHL coach navigating free agency while dealing with the pressures of a demanding fanbase and 24/7 sports coverage.
One of the key areas of focus for Pokorný is strengthening the team’s defensive and goaltending positions. He confirmed that thes are priority areas for recruitment. This mirrors the constant quest in the NHL for teams to find that elusive franchise goalie or shutdown defenseman – players who can single-handedly change the trajectory of a season. Think of how the Tampa Bay Lightning’s acquisition of Andrei Vasilevskiy transformed their fortunes, or how a strong defensive core propelled the St. Louis Blues to a stanley Cup.
The departure of young forward Jakub Konečný was also a topic of discussion. Pokorný acknowledged the player’s desire for more ice time as the primary reason for the transfer. This situation is common in all levels of hockey, from youth leagues to the pros. Players often seek opportunities where they believe they’ll have a greater chance to showcase their skills and develop their game. In the team you build a relationship with the players, but conversely I know it belongs to it. Kony wanted to go another way. He went to the team that promised him more space on the ice. He felt that way, so he did that. I won’t do anything like a coach. I have to focus on the players who have remained here and who come.
This sentiment echoes the pragmatic approach of many coaches who understand the realities of player movement and the need to focus on those committed to the team.
Pokorný also touched on the surprising level of media attention he received after the season. He admitted that it was overwhelming at times. To tell the truth, there was a lot on me. After the sports -challenging season, I was surprised from that attention. Someone says he’s nice, I’m not much for it. Of course, I was glad that the boys managed it, it was their success. Then unfortunately I had to refuse some of the conversations, sometimes it was not accepted with understanding, but it was so much. Where it opened, my face was there, I wasn’t very excited about it. I’m glad it calmed down now. When I go Třebíč or Brno, some still want to take a picture or congratulate me. These are the things that belong to it.
He humorously noted, “Where it opened, my face was there,” indicating the ubiquity of his image in the media. This experience is not unlike what many coaches in high-profile sports leagues like the NFL or NBA face, where success brings intense scrutiny and constant public appearances.
The coach emphasized the advantage of maintaining a core group of players from previous seasons. Familiarity with the coaching staff and the team’s system can lead to greater cohesion and a smoother transition into the new season. This is a strategy often employed by successful teams in all sports – building a strong foundation and making incremental improvements rather than wholesale changes.
Though, some might argue that relying too heavily on the same core group can lead to stagnation and a lack of fresh perspectives. The challenge for Pokorný, and for any coach in a similar situation, is to strike a balance between maintaining continuity and injecting new talent and ideas into the team.
Looking ahead, it will be captivating to see how Pokorný addresses the need for defensive and goaltending reinforcements. Will he be able to attract top talent to fill those crucial positions? And how will he manage the expectations that come with increased media attention and fan enthusiasm? These are the questions that will shape the team’s trajectory in the upcoming season.
Further investigation could explore the specific players being targeted to fill the defensive and goaltending roles, as well as a deeper analysis of the team’s strategic approach to player development and recruitment. For U.S. fans, comparing these strategies to those used by successful NHL teams could provide valuable insights into the art of team building in professional hockey.
