Former soccer player Merle Frohms will be guarding the goal for Real Madrid CF. The 30-year-old signed a three-year contract until June 30, 2028, as the Madrilenes announced on Monday evening. After her farewell to Bundesliga club VfL Wolfsburg, it is Frohm’s first stop abroad. In the Bundesliga she previously played for SC Freiburg and Eintracht Frankfurt.
The fact that Frohms is leaving Wolfsburg has been known since the beginning of the year. In spring she lost her status as number one at VfL, as was the case about a year earlier at the national team. Frohms played for the DFB team from 2018 to 2024 and won EM silver 2022 and Olympic bronze in Paris last year. After that, she ended her DFB career. With the Wolfsburg women, in which Frohms was under contract from 2012 to 2018 and from 2022 to the end of June, she had won the Champions League twice and four times the German championship and seven times the DFB Cup. Wolfsburg had passed a total of ten players at the season finale.
At Real Madrid, where ex-international Melanie Leupolz has just finished her career, a competition is waiting for Frohm’s competition with the Spanish national keeper Misa Rodriguez. And a reunion with Sara Däbritz, who also moves to Madrid for the new season. The national player signed a two -year contract after her contract had expired at the French champion Olympique Lyon. Real is currently the clear number two behind arch-rival and Champions League finalist FC Barcelona.
