Man Utd Goalkeeper Target: Amorim Should Sign Him?

In a recent reportjournalist Pete O’Rourke stated that Manchester United are keeping tabs on Botafogo keeper John Victor. It has been mentioned that the Red Devils are hoping to bring the Brazilian goalie to Old Trafford this summer.

Victor has managed to shine at times with his performances for Botafogo this season but is currently amongst the best keepers in Brazilian football. The Brazilian keeper featured in 28 matches for his current employers, conceding 27 goals and keeping ten clean sheets during this campaign across multiple competitions.

The 29-year-old has proven himself to be a top keeper back in his homeland. He has also been a tidy distributor of the ball based on this pass success rate of 80.8% in the top tier of Brazilian football (stats via fbref.com).

Victor’s current contract at the Brazilian club will run out at the end of 2028. Hence, Man United have to make a convincing offer if they are serious about recruiting him in this summer transfer period.

Victor can use his quick reflexes to make some solid saves at the back for his team. He usually puts his foot through the ball when required and is an accurate distributor of the ball as well.

Standing at 1.97m, Victor is a strong presence in the air and doesn’t mind coming out of his lines to collect loose balls and crosses inside his penalty box. However, the Brazilian sensation is still unproven at the highest level and would need time to prove his worth in Premier League football.

Still, we can expect him to improve the quality of Man United head coach Ruben Amorim’s backline. He is good enough to compete for a regular first-team spot at Old Trafford next season.

However, Victor is unlikely to be an upgrade over Andre Onana at the Mancunian club as he lacks experience in English football. With all things considered, Amorim should only get him on board if he can sign him for a reasonable price. Otherwise, Man United might be better off opting for a more proven goalkeeping option ahead of the new campaign.
