Malaysia Football: FIFA & AFC Sanctions Explained

The beginning of the Malaysian naturalization scandal

This scandal was first sticking out in early 2025 after an in -depth investigation was carried out by international media from Britain and Japan.

They suspect the origin of a number of foreign players who suddenly strengthen the Malaysian national team in a trial match against Vietnam and Japan.

The players are known to come from second-dorm clubs in Europe-especially England, the Netherlands and France.

Strangely, they get the status of Malaysian citizens (WNM) in just a matter of months.

In fact, most of them do not have the blood of Malaysian descent, have never settled in the neighboring country, and do not meet the minimum requirements of domicile 5 years as regulated by FIFA and AFC.

Mode: fake documents and fictitious descent

Investigations found indications of document forgery, fictitious descendants, to manipulation of family data.

One striking example is the case of Daren J Rizal, a player who is said to have a grandmother from Johor.

However, the grandmother’s identity turned out to be engineering by the service bureau affiliated with an international player agent.
