Long -term Latvian Championship player Renārs Magone, with his thoughts, Martins Malnieks, just over a year ago, decided to give a new breath to basketball life in the tenth largest city in Jekabpils. A new association for “Jekabpils Basketball Development” was established, which brought together the best available Jekabpils region basketball players in its first year of existence, who played a variable season in “Liekums.lv” regional Basketball League tournament. Regular season with 19 wins in 21 games and play-off In the battles wiping out all opponents, the Jekabpils people became the champions of the country’s third strongest men’s tournament.
Currently, the club management has informed the LBS that it is ready to take the next step and to take part in the Ramirent National Basketball League in the upcoming season.
Mārtiņš Māltiņš, president of “Jekabpils BA”, was quoted on the LBS website: “Last year, we gathered basketball players from Jekabpils County in the debut season of the newly created club to fight for victory in the regional basketball league. We are already actively working on supporters and the teams in the NBL and in the regional league.
“Jekabpils BA” team management steering wheel was entrusted to Arthur Elksnītis during the debut season, but the team’s leading men were Edijs Stiebriņš, Renārs Magone, Kristers Elksnītis and Matīss Indriksons, who came to the end of the season.
Jekabpils basketball at the LBL level appeared for a short time in the nineties, 1998/1999. Third place in the Main Event ranked “RBS Skals/Jekabpils” team. For a more long -term parade, the city at the highest level of Latvia at the Daugava felt in 2012, spending seven seasons in the highest tournament of the LBL system, which brought two bronze awards in 2014 and 2015 respectively. The previous version of the city’s basketball BC “Jekabpils” resigned to the Second Division tournament and, with the national league silver medals won in the 2022s, the team has been released for ten years.
Currently, the LBS is working on tournament regulations after the clubs will have the opportunity to apply for a new season championships – LBL, the National League and the Regional League, where the team from Jurmala is about to enter as a newcomer.
Last season for the third time in the last four years, “Jelgava” basketball players became champions of the National League, who were able to defeat the unyielding newcomers from Marupe in a difficult final. Gulbene Buki became the bronze medal winners in the series against “Kandava/Turība”.
