“Grayson has exactly the profile that we searched for in the construction position. He is an excellent playmaker who can create from the pick-and-roll for himself and his teammates. He is also very active with his long arms in the defense, collects consistently rebounds and steals and can quickly switch to switching game, which he masters just as well,” says Baskets head coach Marko Stankovic on the obligation of the Floor General.
This is also proven by the figures from the past G-League season: with an average of 7.6 points, 6.3 assists and 4.5 rebounds, Murphy was the linchpin of the South Bay Lakers offensive and was also in defense with 1.5 ball wins. He met around 52 percent of his two and 34 percent of his trial attempts.
In ten games he distributed ten or more assists, posted almost as many double-doubles and was even on a triple-double course several times: For example, he achieved strong 21 points, 11 rebounds and 9 assists against Rip City Remix (the Portland Trailblazer’s farm team), against which San Diego Clipper (La Clipper) came to 10 points, 7 points, 7 Rebounds and 15 assists.
“In the course of the summer break, we became more and more clear that we need a pass-first point guard. Grayson can organize the game better, his teammates better and brings everything that makes up a real building actor. With its almost 1.90 meters, he also complements himself well with Zach cooks,” explains baskets sports director Savo Milovic.
Murphy was already in the foreground in his college time at Belmont University (NCAA 1) with his all-round qualities. In 2022, after completing his college degree, he became the only player in the entire college basketball, who has had more than 1,000 points, 800 rebounds, 700 assists and 250 steals for a university team in the past 30 years.
Professional career started in Germany
After the college degree, his way first took him to Germany, where he ran in the ProA in the 20222/2023 season with Phoenix Hagen and a year later for the Dresden Titans. Grayson Murphy then received a foretaste of the Easycredit BBL in the BBL Cup: in the Titans jersey, he is shemting with 10 points, 7 assists and 2 rebounds against the narrow 85:88 defeat against Bundesliga club Veolia Towers Hamburg.
This aroused the attention of the Los Angeles Lakers, who only invited him to the NBA Summer League and then committed to their G-League team.
