The soccer community is in mourning following the death of Egon Coordes,a celebrated figure in German football,at the age of 80. Coordes, best known for his pivotal role as an assistant coach during FC Bayern Munich‘s dominant era, passed away after a long illness at his home in Memmingen. His contributions helped shape Bayern into the global powerhouse it is today.

While American fans might not immediately recognize the name, Coordes’ impact on European soccer is akin too that of a highly respected offensive or defensive coordinator in the NFL. He was the strategic mind behind the scenes, working alongside legendary managers like udo Lattek, Jupp Heynckes, and Giovanni Trapattoni.

coordes’ legacy is inextricably linked to Bayern Munich’s success in the 1980s and 90s. He served as an assistant coach during four Bundesliga championship-winning seasons (1985, 1986, 1989, and 1990). His tactical acumen and ability to work with star players were instrumental in bayern’s dominance. Think of him as the Tom Moore to Peyton Manning’s Indianapolis colts – a crucial piece of a championship puzzle.

Bayern Munich recognized Coordes’ value, bringing him back in 1997 to assist Trapattoni. He even extended his coaching expertise to the Bayern Munich basketball team in 2011 and 2012, showcasing his versatility and commitment to the club.

While Coordes achieved legendary status as an assistant, his stints as a head coach were less successful. He managed VfB Stuttgart (1986/87), Hamburger SV (1992), and Hannover 96 (1995/96), but was unable to replicate his success. This highlights a common theme in sports: exceptional assistants don’t always translate into successful head coaches. The skill sets required are different, and Coordes’ strengths clearly lay in his ability to support and enhance the work of others.

Before his coaching career, Coordes was a respected player in his own right, appearing in 157 Bundesliga games for Werder Bremen and VfB Stuttgart. This playing experience undoubtedly informed his coaching style and gave him a unique outlook on the game.

The soccer world has lost a true tactician and a dedicated servant of the game. Egon Coordes’ contributions to FC Bayern Munich and German soccer will not be forgotten.
