Club Takeover: 37-Year-Old’s Ambition

RB Leipzig finally found a new coach. After weeks of intense search and numerous rejections, the club’s leadership decided to trust Ole Werner, former coach Werder Bremen. Werner takes over the team from temporary coach Zsolt Löw and signed a contract by 2027. Leipzig, who finished the season in a disappointing seventh place, entrusts Werner’s task of returning to the European scene.

Purchase from Werder and the arrival of the entire professional staff

For the engagement of 37-year-old coach Leipzig, Werder will pay a compensation that can reach two million euros with bonuses. His closest associates come with Werner in Saxony: Assistant Coaches Patrick Kohlmann and Tom Cichon.

Sport Director Leipzig, Marcel Schäfer, is full of enthusiasm: “Ole is a young, promising and extremely ambitious coach. His philosophy of football – structured possession, quickly switching to the attack after winning the ball, very good pressing and tactical flexibility – fits in perfectly with what Leipzig wants to play.”

Werner: “RB Leipzig has great goals – I want to be part of it”

In his first statement as RB Leipzig, Werner stressed why the club attracted him: “RB Leipzig is a symbol of a brave and offensive style of play, professional approach and high ambitions. It was just that to be part of this story.”

Werner has often been mentioned in recent weeks as one of the candidates for a coaching position in Leipzig, especially after candidates such as Sebastian Hoeneß, Roger Schmidt, Oliver Glasner and Cesc Fabregas have fallen. The final decision was made after Jacob Unsestrup confirmed to stay in FC Copenhagen.

Successes in Werder and Kiel

Werner has a solid coaching career behind him. He was first led by Holstein Kiel since 2019. until 2021, then took the Werder Bremen. There he immediately in the first season secured a return to the Bundesliga by conquering another place in 2. League. In Bundesligi, with Werder, stable results: 13. Place in the 2022/23 season, then 9. place, and the 2024/25 season ended as an eighthly equated RB Leipzig.

Although his contract with Werder was valid by 2026, Werner decided not to extend his cooperation at the end of the season, followed by a contract termination of the contract.

RB Leipzig is looking for a return among the elite

Leipzig has one of the worst seasons behind him since he has been competing in the Bundesliga. For the first time since 2016, they have not been able to qualify for European competitions. After parting with coach Marc Rose in March, the team took over the Zsolt Löw, but the change did not bring the desired step.

Olea Werner’s engagement for RB Leipzig is the beginning of a new chapter. The club hopes that this young and promising strategist will be the one who will return the team to the trails of success – and in Europe.
