Winner of two gold balloons (2023, 2024), the talented midfielder of FC Barcelona could miss in the ranks of the Iberian national selection, called to compete in the Euro in Switzerland (July 2-27).
Spain trembles a few days from the start of Euro 2024 in Switzerland (July 2-27). The Roja star, Aitana Bonmatí, suffers from viral meningitis and had to be hospitalized in an emergency. The concern is at its height, although the staff of the selection remains optimistic about its recovery.
Aitana Bonmatí, 27, double winner of the Ballon d’Or (2023, 2024) and pillar of FC Barcelona, had to interrupt his preparations for the euro because of this serious illness. After being feverish for several days, the medical examination revealed that it suffered from viral meningitis, a diagnosis which quickly made its fans react and the football community. Despite the alarming nature of the word “meningitis”, the doctors assured that his condition was under control and that there was no need to panic.
The midfielder, absent in the last friendly match of Spain against Japan (3-1 victory), shared her experience on her social networks, posting a photo of her in the hospital, with a infusion in her arm, while following the match of her teammates. The 2023 world champion told her fans that she was fighting to be ready in time.

The Spanish coach, Montserrat Tomé, spoke to explain the situation. In a statement, she explained that Bonmatí had first felt a slight fever before going to the hospital to take exams. “This morning, she left to take exams with the doctor, and the results revealed viral meningitis,” said Tomé, adding that the situation “is under control”. However, no specific return date has been given. Tomé assured that Spain would wait for its star, without wanting to be too optimistic: “Aitana is a very important player for us, we will wait for it. But I cannot go into medical details.”
The timing of hospitalization is particularly delicate for Spain, which will start Euro 2024 on July 3 against Portugal. With matches against Belgium (July 7) and Italy (July 11) also on the program, the Roja will need all the strength of its team, and in particular Bonmatí, to hope to reissue its 2023 feat, when they won the world title.
Although uncertainty remains on the exact date of its return, the medical staff of La Roja is confident. According to the Spanish press, it seems unlikely that Bonmatí will be absent for the start of the euro. The team hopes that it will be given enough to join the group and contribute to the quest for new trophies.
