Richard Gasquet, a French tennis veteran, defied expectations and a potentially emotional farewell at Roland Garros, securing a frist-round victory against fellow Frenchman Terence Atmane. The match, filled with twists and turns, saw gasquet emerge victorious (6-2, 3-6, 6-3, 6-0) after Atmane struggled with cramps.
Gasquet, playing in his record-extending 22nd Roland Garros, entered the tournament amidst speculation that it could be his last.Tournament organizers even had a retirement trophy prepared, a gesture similar to what we frequently enough see in American sports when a beloved player is nearing the end of their career, like Derek Jeter‘s farewell tour with the New York Yankees. however, Gasquet, hampered by recent calf tears, wasn’t ready to hang up his racket just yet. He relished the opportunity to disrupt the anticipated “tribute” with a gritty performance.
The match itself was a rollercoaster. After a strong start by Gasquet, Atmane found his rhythm, only to be derailed by severe leg cramps. This physical setback led to erratic play from both competitors, marked by unforced errors and moments of brilliance. It was a true test of endurance and mental fortitude, reminiscent of a grueling five-set match at the U.S. Open.
Despite the challenges,Gasquet capitalized on his opportunities, converting his sixth match point to seal the win in 2 hours and 17 minutes.

I really did not know what to expect and I am happy to be there for another match,
Gasquet said after the match. He acknowledged the emotional weight of the occasion, knowing it could have been his last appearance. To come back another time is extraordinary. I’m not finished, I have a little left … My father had to watch in Béziers, I wanted my friends to go up because it could be the end, it’s really special.

Gasquet revealed that he drew inspiration from the emotional tribute to Rafael Nadal the previous day.He noted the impact Nadal had on his career, even though their head-to-head record heavily favored the Spaniard (18-0).
There was emotion when he cited my name at the beginning. He still hurt me! 18-0, it’s challenging to live but at least he quoted me! I saw all these years with this huge champion and the big person he is outside and it allowed me to have the desire to win today,
Gasquet explained.
Looking ahead, Gasquet could face world number one Jannik Sinner in the next round, a matchup he openly welcomes. Sinner, it would be a vrey nice poster for an end of career, we cannot dream better…
A match against Sinner would be a fitting challenge for Gasquet, offering a chance to test himself against the best before potentially calling it a career, similar to a veteran quarterback facing a rising star in the NFL playoffs.
