Track and Field Power Couple Carolina and Patrik Klüft Announce Divorce

In a move that’s surprised many in the track and field community, former athletics stars Carolina and Patrik Klüft have announced they are divorcing after nearly two decades of marriage. The couple, celebrated figures in Swedish sports, confirmed their separation in a statement, emphasizing the amicable nature of their split.

Carolina Klüft, 42, a dominant force in multi-events, is considered one of Sweden’s greatest athletes. Her husband, Patrik Klüft, 47, was a successful pole vaulter in his own right. the two met during their active years on the Swedish athletics team, forging a bond that led to their marriage in Scotland in September 2007. Patrik, formerly known as Kristiansson, adopted the Klüft surname following their marriage.

The couple released a joint statement to Expressen, stating, It is indeed a common decision and we separated already last winter. We are friends and feel no need for further statement as it is indeed a private matter.

From Stockholm to Järvsö: A Dream project Turns Sour

In 2018, the Klüfts relocated from Stockholm to Järvsö, a town in Hälsingland, Sweden. There,they embarked on an aspiring venture: Camp Järvsö,a hotel and training facility created in partnership with Springtime Travel and trainers Cecilia Gustafsson and Peppe Lindholm. The project aimed to transform a traditional Hälsingegård (farmhouse) into a modern wellness retreat, complete with a restaurant, gym, yoga hall, and gymnasium.

Carolina Klüft had previously described Camp Järvsö as a dream project, actively participating in the facility by leading workouts for guests. However, the dream soon faced harsh realities.

Last summer, Carolina Klüft stepped down from the board, and less than three months later, Camp Järvsö Holding AB filed for bankruptcy. The applicant cannot pay his debts, and it is not only temporary. Therefore,the applicant requests to be bankrupt, the bankruptcy submission stated.

Financial Troubles and Mounting Debt

According to reports, Camp Järvsö Holding and its two subsidiaries accumulated a staggering SEK 33.2 million (approximately $3.2 million USD) in debt at the time of the bankruptcy. This echoes similar struggles seen by other athlete-backed ventures, highlighting the challenges of transitioning from the field to the business world. Think of athletes like Curt Schilling, whose video game company 38 Studios went bankrupt after receiving a $75 million loan from Rhode Island, or even Magic Johnson’s restaurant chain that faced financial difficulties.

Earlier this spring, Carolina Klüft expressed her disappointment over the failure of Camp Järvsö. Its really boring, really, really boring actually.We had made pretty big investments and renovated. Then this came with inflation,high interest rates,high electricity prices,the war in Ukraine and everything it meant. We did everything we could to avoid bankruptcy and really tried to save it into the last. But in the end we had to draw a limit, and unfortunately it was like this, she told Expressen.

The Klüfts have three daughters together. The divorce marks the end of a important chapter for two of Sweden’s most recognizable sports figures. While the reasons for the split remain private, the couple’s statement suggests an amicable parting of ways.
