Representing the Bayard Argentan Badminton club is the Shanmugarajah family: Thanjeevan (44), his sister Archuna (35), and her children Arthur (16) and Charly (13). Their story is deeply intertwined with the sport. Thanjeevan, a veteran of the club for almost 30 years, paved the way for his sister. My brother was quite good, so I decided to follow him,
Archuna recalls. I have always bathed in badminton and I ended up joining the club in 2008.
For Arthur and Charly, badminton is practically in their DNA.Their mom and I met in badminton,
Thanjeevan explains. While we were playing, they were next to the land in their stroller having fun with ruffles. Everyone traces their route today.
Charly dedicates six hours a week to training, while Arthur, currently in a sports-focused program in Caen, trains a remarkable 13 hours per week. This dedication mirrors the commitment seen in young American athletes striving for collage scholarships or professional careers.
It’s always a special moment as we see the players only once in the year,
says Arthur, highlighting the unique camaraderie of the event. We try to stay in touch on the networks but we exchange especially when the tournament is approaching,
adds Archna.
Reconnecting with Tamil Roots
Thanjeeevan lived In Sri Lanka until he was one and a half years old, while Archuna was 3 years old upon arriving in France. I don’t have many memories of my childhood in Sri Lanka, but my mother tells me a lot,
Archuna shares. This echoes the experiences of many second-generation immigrants in the U.S., who rely on family stories to connect with their heritage.
Charly and Arthur, however, were born in Falaise, France. This generational difference highlights the evolving relationship with their Tamil heritage.
We don’t have many opportunities to meet Tamils. The tournament allows us to plunge back into the culture of Sri Lanka, and for me to talk about my native language that I do not fully master.
Arthur and Charly, sadly, do not speak Tamil. This is my only regret as a father,
jokes Thanjeevan. It is my fault, I should have pushed them, but we favored French with their mother who is French by birth.
This is a common dilemma faced by immigrant families worldwide, balancing the desire to preserve their native language with the need to integrate into their new society.
A Return to Sri Lanka in 2024
Despite being located 8,500 km from Sri Lanka, the Shanmugarajah family had the opportunity to visit in 2024, specifically for the World Tamil Badminton Championship held there. It was a lot of emotions because I hadn’t returned there for 30 years,
Thanjeevan admits. This pilgrimage underscores the enduring power of cultural identity and the importance of events like this championship.
Thanjeevan narrowly missed victory in the +40 years singles final last year and seeks redemption this year. However, the rising talents of Arthur and Charly could very well steal the spotlight. Could we see a Shanmugarajah sibling rivalry mirroring the Williams sisters’ dominance in tennis?
