Jeonnam Province Ignites Sporting Spirit at 64th Annual Games

JANGSEONG, South Korea – Teh 64th Jeollanam-do Sports Competition kicked off it’s four-day run on april 18th at the Yellow City Stadium in Jangseong, Jeollanam-do, marking a important event for the province and its athletes.

The opening ceremony was a star-studded affair, attended by key figures including Jeollanam-do Governor Kim Young-rok, alongside Kim Han-jong, Jang Sung-gun, Kim Tae-kyun, Yoo Seung-min (Chairman of Korea Sports), and Song Jin-ho (Chairman of Jeonnam-do Sports). Their presence underscored the importance of the games too the region.

Under the banner of “Dreams of Dreams, Jangseong, Jeonnam, to the World,” the competition is set to host approximately 7,000 athletes from 22 cities and counties. These athletes will compete across 23 different sporting events over the four-day period, vying for top honors and showcasing their athletic prowess.

The pre-show entertainment featured captivating performances, including Kim Eun-sook’s Gayageum Byeongchang and Song kyung-bae’s Daegeum performance, setting a vibrant tone for the games. The official ceremony included the opening declaration, a formal tournament announcement, readings of the Sports Charter, and oaths taken by representatives and referees, all emphasizing fair play and sportsmanship.

A highlight of the opening ceremony was the symbolic lighting of the stadium torch. The honor was shared by a diverse group, including Kim Da-bin Go, On-eun, Shin-mye’s family, Kim Mi-soo, and Jae-kyung and Jae-kwang Hyang-woo. The final torchbearers where Jangseong’s own YouTube personality, Gamst, and Kim Yong-ryul from the Jeonnam Provincial Office’s fencing team. Together, they ignited the torch, symbolizing unity and the pursuit of success for the region’s two million residents.

In his welcome address, Kim Han-jong, Jang Sung-gun, expressed his hopes that the entire community would unite to expand the foundation of sports. This sentiment reflects a broader goal of promoting athletic participation and community engagement throughout Jeollanam-do.

Following the formal proceedings, the celebration continued with a series of performances by popular artists, including Kim Yeon-ja (‘Amorpati’), Kim Tae-yeon, Lin, GOD’s Son Ho-young, Kim Tae-woo, and Jung Dong-won. The entertainment lineup also featured multimedia displays, dance performances, and a dazzling fireworks show, culminating in a synchronized drone display involving 300 drones.

Notably, the drone show marked a first for Jeollanam-do, showcasing the 64th Jeonnam Games and Jangseong-gun’s city brand, ‘Growth Wall’. This innovative display highlighted the region’s commitment to progress and progress.

The 64th Jeonnam Games features a wide array of sports, including track and field, soccer, tennis, soft tennis, volleyball, table tennis, wrestling, archery, Taekwondo, badminton, boxing, judo, bowling, swimming, cycling, kendo, shooting, golf, Go (baduk), weightlifting, and billiards. With the exception of bowling and shooting,all events are being held in Jangseong.A total of 283 gold medals, 283 silver medals, and 419 bronze medals will be awarded. Organizers anticipate approximately 6,950 athletes and an estimated 20,000 visitors to the region during the games.

This event mirrors the spirit of state games held across the United States, fostering local talent and community pride. Just as high school football is a cornerstone of many American towns, these games provide a platform for athletes in Jeollanam-do to shine and inspire future generations.
